Kalri awakened in her room at the Palace. Her sleep was disjointed as she drifted in and out of its twilight. 'Sabonth. I can't take this anymore.' Her voice tinged with an impatience of youth. 'I sit here, locked away in the palace, day after day. I grow tired of this. I know why Father keeps me hidden away but surely fate holds more than lessons and hiding behind the tapestry of the throne room watching as he transacts his dealings.' She glanced out of the window in her room high above the city, looking out over the courtyard. 'Kalri, you know your father cares for you deeply. He just looks out for your welfare. If anyone were to find out that Galbatorix had a daughter...Well it would not be good.' Kalri glanced back at the black dragon, her red eyes and the red star on her forehead blazed gloriously against the black scales of her hide. "I know but it's been forever since we've been anywhere. I need some excitement, not that Daddy's lessons aren't exciting." She loved when her father had time to teach her. It was the only thing that made her life within the castle tolerable, the time she spent with him. "I have a few hours before the sun is up. Maybe I'll go for a walk in town. Father won't care as long as I make sure to cover up." She hated having to wear the lightweight hood with the cover that only left her eye's exposed. She did it because he asked her to. She did everything he requested of her. "I promise I'll be careful and return before sun up." Pulling the hood over her head, she lifted the half mask over the lower part of her face. Donning her cloak, she took the silver sword her father had given her and sheathed it securely on her back. Looking in the mirror, all she could see of her was her dark brown eyes with the fiery goldent streaks. Satisfied she bade the dragon goodbye and climbed out her window. The wind lightly blew her cloak, causing it to rustle softly in the breeze. She jumped lithely to roof of a nearby building. Lighting on it's thatching, she rolled until at the edge and lowered herself to the ground.
She walked quietly within Uru'baen as she had done many times, studying every crevice. She enjoyed these solitary walks in the early morning hours. The city was desolate at this hour and it was the only time in which she was free of the castle. The moon still hung high in the sky as she made her way to the royal stables. The horses rustled in their stalls as she walked through, uneasy by her presence. "Relax friends. I do not wish to play today." Exiting the other end, she made her way to a tree on the hilltop. She sat with her back against the tree, watching and thinking. 'Someday, he will let me into his service.' That was all she ever wanted. To fight by his side and please him.

Mar walked through the city of Uru'baen as he normally did, checking the area around the castle for spies or any other kind of threat. The king had made him vow in the ancient language to protect him and his 'prodigy,' though Mar was unsure what the king meant at the time. Dressed in his black cloak, with his duel Kodachi strapped across his back, Mar walked the edge of the castle grounds proper.

Kalri sat under the light of the moon daydreaming of life's possibilities. She felt the presence close to her. Reaching out she sensed it was Mar, he was an assassin, recovery expert and body guard in her father's service. She had felt his presence many times within the castle, and had seen him in the throne room often as she watched from behind her father's tapestry. Galbatorix did not want her known to the world yet, but he did want her to be fully versed in his dealings. She often sat for hours hidden behind the protection of his powerful wards around her, observing and learning. For the most part it was boring...really boring, but there were times when she delighted in watching him take out his wrath upon those who failed him.
Feeling it was time, she reached out to Mar. Father wouldn't be upset as he had made the elf swear in the ancient language to protect them, although Mar had no idea that it was she he had sworn to protect. 'Mar. On the hill. I know you see me. Don't tell father.' She sent him the vision of her at Galbatorix's side. He seated upon the ornate throne, her at his knee, his hand gently stroking her hair.

Mar felt a presence nearby, and suddenly someone reached his mind. Throwing up subtle barriers, Mar made sure to keep who ever it was from seeing anything, though he allowed the image to enter his mind. Understanding leapt upon him as a Tiger does on its prey. 'So that's what he meant,' Mar thought as he headed towards the woman. Walking softly, quietly, Mar moved through the shadows, little more than a faint whisper on the wind. Not wanting to draw attention from anyone who may be listening, Mar kept his mouth closed. 'I am coming, Ma'am,' he told her with his mind. 'Though I highly doubt the king would approve if such a meeting,' he added, a slight smile in his mental voice.

'There are some things that Daddy doesn't need to know.' She smiled slyly feeling his presence as he approached. A mere whisper on the stillness of the early morning air.

Standing above her, Mar looked down. "Well, it is not just me who would be punished, Ma'am," he said, making sure she knew he was formidable if she should chose to test her skills. Standing straight, he looked out over towards the palace. "How long has it been?" he asked quietly, feeling the hilts of his swords.

"Too long." She looked up at Mar. "Daddy won't care that you are here. Only that I left the castle unescorted. I hate wearing this stupid mask. One day I will no longer have to hide behind oaths in the ancient language, tapestries, and magical wards. I want to get out. I want to do something." She looked at him knowing that he probably had no idea how she felt.

Mar looked down at his charge, now knowing his task was to protect her above all else in the Empire. He knew how she felt, at least somewhat. He knew what it was like to be bound by an oath in the ancient language, about how to be hidden behind lies and fear. "Don't worry, Mi'lady," he said softly, quietly. "The time will come when you can do as you wish. And maybe I.." he trailed off, remembering who he was talking to.

She looked at him as his voice trailed. He had secret hopes to she could see. "Shall we make way back to the castle. The sun will be up soon and I need to be back in before my lessons begin. I wonder who will be teaching me swords today? The last swordmaster met with a small accident!" The evil fires danced across her eyes. "Maybe you could take up my training while father is occupied with Empire matters?"

Mar shot his gaze down to Kalri at the mentioning of being her new swords master. Softening his stern gaze, he looked away. "Well, that is something you must talk to your father about, Ma'am," he said carefully. "I would not mind it, but it is truly up to your father. But, you are right. It is getting late, and we must get back to the castle, preferably before the king notices that you are gone," he said with a smile.

"Mar. Quit calling me Ma'am! I hate that. Call me Kalri when father isn't present. As for my swordmaster. I can choose for myself but if it makes you feel better I will speak to father." Kalri bordered on rudeness though not meaning to. It was just her way. She stood and looked back to the castle. 'I think perhaps I may have to take a trip...soon.'

Mar bowed his head slightly. "I'm sorry, Ma--Kalri. It is a habit pounded into me since my youth, centuries ago," he said, trying not to sound weak, but also trying to sound respectful. Gesturing towards the castle, Mar moved away from the tree. "Shall we, Kalri?"

"I suppose we should." Kalri turned and began to walk back to the castle. Her mood somber. Not like her usually pleasant self at all. She thought to herself about how she would sneek out of the castle tonight to find an adventure. She would leave Sabonth and go out on her own. Maybe to Dras-Leona. Smiling a little she walked with a quicker pace. Mar following her.

As Mar followed her back to castle, he noticed she had picked up her pace. 'She has a plan for something,' he thought with a smile and a chuckle. 'Good for her!'

Kalri walked back to the building outside of her room. Lifting herself onto the roof she jumped to the castle wall and scaled it gracefully until she was back to her window. Turning to Mar she gave him a slight nod of her head as her plan formed in her mind. Hurrying inside she began to pack a bag and gather her weapons.
