Ruby stayed silent for a moment, though she gave Elias a rather cold stare. She understood his wish to not put his men in any more harm than necessary, but this was war. Much had to be risked and many sacrifices had to be made if other families were to be spared the sad fate of her own. She had made a vow to vanquish all evil in the land or die trying. Elias' statement to her sounded rather selfish and shallow, as if he really did not trust in the abilities of their magicians or their troops. She glanced over at the Ismalian and smirked; she'd heard his grumblings as clear as day, as well as his daughter's rebuke. The sight made her sorely miss her father and Weiss for a moment, but she quickly focused back on the task at hand. "Should we make the battle solely about magic, it becomes more a battle of chance than skill. Let the magicians worry about each other." She smiled at the General's statement, pleased that the older man seemed to admire her for her skill. "Blade or bolt, whichever suits your fancy," she replied to him. Her cloak slightly drew back, revealing part of her ever-present weapon. As it was, it was hard to recognize what exactly it was supposed to be. It was compacted, in a safe form to prevent accidental misfires. Even in its bow form, it looked like no crossbow ever seen before. Its loading mechanism was all encased within the metal frame, and she would be able to load another bolt through a lever on the side. And then, there was its fully expanded form, which was still able to fire its projectiles, but more represented her beloved scythe.

Nasuada resisted the urge to raise her fingers to her suddenly throbbing head. She had hoped never to have to lead a war council again in her lifetime, but fate had other plans. Keeping a brave face for the sake of courage, she held up a hand for silence. "It seems to me that neither magicians alone nor blades alone are going to win this fight. We need both in equal measures to succeed. When rider Ian arrives with his fighters we shall discuss with him exactly how taxing it may be to erect our barrier. If it is far too grave a distraction, than we hide our magicians from enemy eyes and wait for them to locate and hopefully eliminate the other magicians. And then there is the matter of the shades. They love weapons as well as magic. Our riders will be most fitted to fight them, however, we do not have enough riders with us to match each shade. General Riker, Lord Elias, Ruby; your skills and men will best needs be placed tactfully to intercept the shades. The riders and magicians will stay in the city until the fighting begins, but your ground forces I suggest placing outside of the city with Arcuane, to trap the enemy against Gilleads walls."

OOC: Don't die thread!!!
Colonel Elias listened attentively to the opinions of those within the tent as respectfully as possible. He agreed with some and desired to rebuke the those he did not, however, he knew the importance of having an open mind as well. He nodded to his General, relenting to his words. They were spending too much time talking about the "what ifs" rather than focusing on what they knew. Although, he still believed that this magick barrier would be the best defensive option thus far.
~~~
General Riker nodded in agreement with Ruby's assessment about the magicians. He was about to speak when Queen Nasuada called for silence within the war council. The room settled in silence as the Queen voiced her authority and opinion. Sam had always respected his Queen for her sharp mind and knew that she would strive to do her best for her people. He agreed with her opinion wholeheartedly.
"Aye, m'lady. It does not matter if we have magicians or soldiers or that of Riders; we must stand united if we are to win this battle." Riker voiced, solidifying the Queen's orders. "I will help ensure that our troops will be fortified among our terrain, along with a battalion to aid Arucane in the battle."
"It will be done, my Queen." Elias agreed. "My riders and I shall be stationed on the forefront; our blades will not fail you."
"Ismalia will hold the line, Nasuada." Tristan assured. "And lest you all forget, our people hold an advantage over those who are talented in magic; we have trained ourselves well to fight against it and use the unique affects to our abilities. We will aid in destroying the monstrosities." Tristan replied in all seriousness.
"Yes, a fine point, Prince Tristan." General Riker stated. "By your leave, my Queen, we shall erect our forces and adjust accordingly as more allies arrive." The General supplied, knowing that time was of the essence and that they needed much to prepare. This would be the first great battle against the Shades and they needed every advantage they could obtain. In two days time, they would know the true face of the enemy.
OOC: Ah, now it is time to remember the personalities of my characters.
Ruby listened respectfully as the queen gave her commands. She understood very well her reasonings. To Ruby, the sheer number of Shades that dotted the attacking forces both infuriated and terrified her. She had slain the one that had murdered her mother, but she had earned that victory after days of battle. How was an army of them meant to fall? She knew the answer well enough; she had to place faith in those who fought by her side. She knew she would never be able to defeat them all on her own, but she didn't have to. At the end of this war, every one of us is going to be a Shadeslayer, she thought to herself as she waited to take her leave of the queen. ~~~~~ Pyrrha stationed herself outside the command pavilion, having observed Prince Tristan and Princess Tatiana enter. At the Queen Mother's behest, she had been sent to guard the sovereign's cousin in preparation for the upcoming battle. The ironic justice crossed her mind while she waited for her charges to emerge from their meeting. Her mother had tortured and tormented this very man several times, nearly killing him once by using an Emerald. And now here she was, protecting him with her life. Not only was he a member of the royal family, but he truly had a great mind and a greater heart. Their country would be at a great loss if he were slain. Her thoughts moved to his daughter, the young princess. Well, in truth, Tati was the same age as Pyrrha, but her occasionally flamboyant nature, especially when dealing with her family, made her seem younger in the protector's eyes. Her eyes misted over for a brief moment as she became envious of the princess. She had a perfect life: two parents who loved her and two brothers who cared about her. All Pyrrha ever had was a single mother so full of bitterness toward the world that she refused to see the good in it.
"It is settled then." Nasuada finished, concisely ending their war council. Slowly the Generals and Lords trickled from the tent until at last she was alone with her thoughts. There had been many close to her who had urged her to return to Illead and take safety there. However she knew her presence would give courage to those that served her. She was the queen that had overthrown Galbatorix, though now his name was becoming a blessedly distant memory. Still, such atrocities were hard to ever forget.
The only thing Nasuada had agreed to was staying behind the city walls. She did insist that she would be mounted, armed, and armored. In the last sixteen years she had since outgrown the girl who had led a rebellion army. In her place she had become a woman, and a warrior in her own right. Standing stiffly, she swept from the war pavilion to see to her preparations. ***
Maude turned out of the pavilion without waiting for any word of leave. She knew the plan and was anxious to return to Magda. She found her red dragon dozing off in the dragon court, the square space of mud and and grass that had been built at the base of the Lords Estate in the city for the coming and going of dragon riders. A few other dragons of varying sizes milled about, but it was clear they were all as young as Magda. None of the elders had shown yet, if they would at all. At the sound of Maude's footsteps the dragons turned their heads towards her, and Magda stood and fanned her wings in greeting.
The Human Queen has good plans. said Magda in a surprisingly feminine voice.
Yes. Maude agreed as she climbed up into her dragons saddle. Let's fly for a bit, please. Maybe we can see Arucane on it's way? Happy to oblige, Magda trotted a few paces before leaping into the air and quickly soaring up into the blue sky.
A chilling wind shrouded Gil'aed, despite the blazing sun that illuminated the massive city. Colonel Elias surveyed the terrain with a strategic eye as he ordered his men to maintain the city's outer walls whilst General Riker oversaw the inner walls' defenses with the other leaders and generals. The air held a foreboding feeling, leaving the young Colonel restless and uneasy as he surveyed the fortifications of the city. He had encountered small skirmishes of the enemy over the past few months, but it would be the first time, today, that he would engage them in battle.
Elias took a deep breath, calming his mind and emotions. He had never been in a full-fledged battle before, as the last war practically ended when he reached puberty. However, he would never forget the smell, sound, and feeling of death; death was not only found on the battlefield. His only wish, was that he would survive this battle to reunite with his family and friends. He ripped Temperance's reins as he felt his stallion shift anxiously. "Shh, easy." He soothed his horse as he further contemplated tactics and war. The enemy was formidable and dangerous, but they lacked heart, determination, and purpose; it would be the enemy's downfall. Peace had arisen in the land, and the people would not let it go so easily. He would not. He gave himself a firm nod; resolute in their cause. Let them come. And then let them fall by their blades.
*** Ian's green eyes adjusted quickly to the dimming lights of the sun as night began to spring forth. He glanced behind him briefly, taking in how his men seemed to blend skillfully into the trees and land. He felt his lip twitch as he considered how far Arucane had come. No longer were they a band of misfits, stragglers, or farmers. Since their formation, Ian had trained them long and hard to become the skilled magicians, warriors and rogues they now were. They were a force to be reckoned with; a burning light for all to look toward - out of hope or fear, depending on the beholder.
Ian felt an unnatural shadow pass him and instantly knew that Castiel was moving ahead. His green eyes flickered up and spotted the light reflection of Castiel's white scales; his dragon was high above the air, easily mistaken for a bird if not for Ian's eyesight; a mixture of his growing bond with Castiel and of his ancestry. Ian stealthy moved onward, leading his men further north toward Gil'ead; they had to be careful as the unknown enemies could appear at any moment.
They continued forth and after a few hours, Ian knew they were close to Gil'ead. Castiel's report solidified his thought.
I see it. Castiel informed Ian in his baritone voice. Another half hour and you'll meet the first outpost of the city, Ian.
Thank you, Cas. Ian held up a hand for his men to see, before gesturing it in quick signals to inform his men that they were near their destination.
Hold on, Ian...I think I spot another dragon in the sky. I can't tell if its a friend or foe from this distance. Cas warned.
Ian tensed at the news. Be careful, Cas. I'm on my way to you. Ian signaled for another member to lead Arucane onward right before bolting into the forest toward Castiel's location.
*** General Riker hovered over a map, surveying the area. A thoughtful expression covered his features as he studied the areas that he had fortified with troops. They had worked long and hard throughout the day and were finally settling for the night. His eyes gazed over to the enemy's army. One more day for preparation. He prayed to the Gods that it would be enough.
OOC: Hmmm...what enemies can I bring forth? lol.
Captain Zack Kell stared out across the gathered ranks, his brow knit as he waited in anticipation. An odd mixture of fear and thrill churned in his stomach. Though he'd led a few brief skirmishes against the Shade's forces in the past, this was the largest scale battle both he and his men ever faced. He momentarily wondered if Uncle Will had ever felt this way before a battle, during the infamous war against Galbatorix. He'd often talked about the war and continually praised his comrades while telling stories, but rarely spoke about his personal feelings and experiences. I wish you were here, Uncle, he thought to himself as he awaited orders from Colonel Elias. ~~~~~ Ashton caught a glimpse of her father through her enchanted glass, reading his thoughtful expression. She was sitting among a number of other young recruits and volunteers, a mix of battle academy students and recently graduated magicians. Ash was uncertain which group she would be placed with when the battle came, but she hoped they would place her in direct combat. Her arcane abilities were acceptable, but she was much more comfortable in using physical weapons. Still, growing up with military parents taught her that she must go wherever she was commanded, and she had to trust that her superiors would know where her abilities would be most useful. She only hoped her father wasn't prejudiced in his decision.
