Character's name: Maru
Character's age: 18
Character's attitude: Maru is a quiet man, having been a slave for most of his life. He served an exceptionally cruel master for many years, and his will to fight back had been broken long ago. Nonetheless, he is a fantastic fighter, and his own will has been slowly starting to be restored since he was rescued by Gladia Celesti.
Character's Race: human
Character's appearance:
Maru has bright reddish-orange hair and violet-blue eyes. The piercings on his face were placed there by his former master, and they can't be removed without killing him. He also has several piercings through the rest of his body, though the most are on his face. Since joining Gladia Celesti, he wears the clothing provided by them. As a slave, he wore black with bright red lining, and red clouds, which was the crest of his master. His brand is a cloud, as well.
Character's allegiance: Gladia Celesti
Weapons: He can fight with his bare hands, but he can also use almost any weapon you place in his hands. He mostly uses blow darts or a bow and arrow.
Other Info: He was born a member of the Ayati tribe, but was kidnapped by slavers when he was three years old.
History: Maru was born into the Ayati tribe to two of the greatest leaders. They cared for him greatly and were prepared to protect him with their lives. But one night three years later, a group of slavers attack the tribe and kidnapped him, along with a few other children.
Maru struggled against his captors and tried again and again to escape from them, but to no avail. He was just too small to fight them off, and they kept too close an eye on him to keep him from running away. At the slave market in Dras-Leona, his rebellious, fighting spirit caught the eye of a man looking to buy. He was a cruel man, known for owning many slaves; the ones who acted only as servants were often beaten, and the rest he was rumored to have fun pitting them against each other in combat, or just torturing them. He bought Maru and had him thrown in with the other slaves. The man also had a brother who was a magician, who would train the fighting slaves.
This magician also created a way to prevent them from escaping or attacking the masters so long as he was alive. He created something akin to a leash; large studded piercings would be placed throughout the slave's body, and whenever he wished, these piercings would send a huge shock through the slave. It was an imprecise method, however. Most of the slaves couldn't handle recieving the piercings in the first place. Others died when the tried to remove them. Still, others recieved too large of a shock and died from that. In the end, Maru was the only one who survived this experiment before the masters decided the practice would cost them too many slaves.
Over the years, Maru stopped trying to escape. The piercings had done their work; his spirit was broken. He was a slave, made to work and do his master's bidding. Until one night Gladia Celesti came to rescue them. The thought of escaping burned in him again when they came and, somehow through the pain of the shock he recieved he managed to kill the magician so he could get away. Since then, he has become an active member of Gladia Celesti, devoted to the leaders and following whatever they tell him to.
Role Play Sample:
Maru lay on the floor before his master's feet, feeling the weight of the world upon him. Whatever the master was going to do to him now, he was certain it would not be pleasant.
"Well, brother?" the master asked the magician, "what do you think we should do with him now? I've honestly no idea how he has survived this long."
"It was his fighting spirit which first drew your attention," the magician said. "That is probably the reason why he has lived with the leash. Most of the first ones we placed it on died within a week. The longest besides him lived five years."
"And yet he survived twelve? Are you sure it works correctly?"
"Do you want me to test it?" the magician asked. Maru trembled at the terrible glee in his voice. There was suddenly a noise, and the room filled with a dark smoke.
"Intruders! Guards!" the master called. Maru looked up, wondering what was going on. Out from the smoke, a tall woman appeared next to him.
"Come on," she told him, "we're going to get you out of this place." Maru looked at her, confused.
"But...who are you?" he asked, trying to understand what was going on. Who would want to rescue a bunch of slaves?
"We are Gladia Celesti," she replied.
Gladia Celesti... Maru had heard the master speak of them before, and knew that they were a self-founded tribe of escaped slaves who continuously rescued more of them.
"Do you want to get out of here, or not?" she asked impatiently. She vanished in the smoke again, though he could hear her coordinating the rescue of the rest of the slaves.
"You're not going anywhere," he heard the magician say behind him. He felt the shock through his body, a burst of pain so intense he fell to the ground. But the woman's words had woken something in him that had been long dead. He got to his feet and, though the agony as still running through him, he threw a hard punch at the magician. The man fell, stunned, to the floor. Maru fell on him and started strangling him. He was going to get out of here, and he was going to live. He was shaking from the pain, but he didn't loosen his grip. Then the pain suddenly ceased. The magician was dead. Without a word, though feeling just a little shocked, Maru stood and followed the fleeing slaves.
