Mar walked to Nashante, picking her up in his arms as if she weighed nothing more than a pillow. He reached the mind of the child, sending feelings of calm and peace. 'Calm yourself, child,' he said to the unborn baby. 'You will be freed soon.' Mar walked Nashante back to the room, setting her softly on the bed. He took a step back, looking out the door. He walked to the door and shut it, returning to the side of the bed. "Is there anything else?"

Nashante glared at him as the pains of her labor continued. Her water broke upon the bed as she looked at him with fear in her eyes. “Yes! Get the midwife and a healer!” The panic set upon her as the pains came quickly one on top of the other. “This child comes now.” Her breath came heavy as the pains continued. She grabbed her stomach as the waves of agony washed over her. Her insides feeling as if they would rip out from the force. She looked into his eyes. “Do something! Anything!”

Mar hurried to get the midwife and a healer. He sat back as the midwife and healer did what they were trained to do. "I'm here," Mar said, kneeling on the floor beside Nashante, but not speaking to her. He addressed the child, worrying more for the child's well-being than Nashante's.

Nashante’s hands gripped the sheet of the bed pulling them as her knuckles glistened white against the dark blue color of them. The midwife tending to her as the healer stood nearby. Their orders to tend to the child first and foremost. She looked as Mar knelt next to her speaking soothing words, knowing he spoke to the child within her. The pains came over her in waves as the sweat formed upon her body as it labored to bring forth the child. She lay back as the pains wracked her body, her voice leaving her from the effort in screams. The midwife tried to quiet her to no avail. The pain was immense as the force of them bore down upon her. The midwife looked to Mar, “This may take a while. Are you staying with your wife or do you want us to get you when it is over?” The child within Nashante reached out to Mar. A feeling of fear emanated from it.

Mar felt the fear from the child as if it were his own. He shook his head, taking Nashante's hand in his. "No," he said. "I'll stay with her." He smiled at Nashante, genuinely trying to sooth her now. He knew that the best chance for the child was with Nashante. "You'll be fine."

Nashante looked at him incredulously as he took her hand. The pain and fear softening her, she gladly accepted his touch. She breathed heavy as she struggled through the pains. Her hand gripping Mar’s tightly as the pains rose and subsided. Her body tired and aching, she tried to rest between pains. The sweat clung to her heavily as she labored.

"You have to push," he said, his mouth near her ear. "Push. We don't want to lose this child. If we do, we'll just have another one." He let his words sink in as he moved back, focusing on the child, calming it.

Nashante heard his words. Her movements to push the child into the world were feeble with the weariness of her muscles. The tears streamed down her face as her body screamed out in pain, her muscles aching and tired. “I can’t do this!” Her hand reached out to Mar. She hated the man, loathed the very fact that he was breathing, but he was all she had. She rolled herself around her swollen belly as she worked to push the child. Her muscles ineffective at holding her in position, she fell back upon the bed as her breathing came heavy. “I cannot do this alone.”
The midwife watched the strange interaction between the two. Listening to Mar’s words to Nashante she wondered what he meant by having to have another. She returned her attention to the woman, showing Mar how to support her back while holding her leg at the thigh. She directed the healer to the other side as she returned to watch as the child slowly progressed on the journey to life independent from its mother. Her eyes shone worry that things were taking so long. She place her hand upon Nashantes belly as she felt the strong contractions take hold of her. “Push Now!” she commanded. The child within weakening with the strain of the labor.

Mar sat behind Nashante, his legs along her side as he held hers on his arms. "You have to push!" he said to her, holding her tight to him, supporting her body. "All you have to do is push, I've got the rest."

Nashante hated her need and dependence on Mar. If her nightmare were to be over though, she would need to accept his help. With the strength of him behind her and holding her legs, Nashante was able to bear down more effectively. Her pushes brought the child closer to the end, but the labor continued to progress slowly. Her pain great and body loosing strength she leaned back against Mar. The midwife between her legs kept changing towels as Nashante bled heavily. The towels piling upon the floor in a large bloody heap. The healer looked at the midwife with concern in his eyes. “I cannot heal her until the child is born. The herbs would harm the child.” The midwife looked at Mar with much concern on her face. “We could loose them both.” She turned her attention back to Nashante.

Mar got a look pf horror in his eyes, and not just for the child. If either of them died, he would have to face the wrath of the king. He had be entrusted to the safety of both Nashante and the child, and if he failed...He did not want to know what would happen. "What do I have to do?" he asked the midwife, trying to calm the child. "Just tell me and I'll do it."

Nashante paid no attention to anyone in the room as the pain continued to wrack her body. The midwife looked at Mar. “We need to get the child out now. Take your hands and put pressure her on her belly. Not too hard, gentle and firm. Do you understand? I will do the rest. Nashante push now!” The midwife placed a hand above Nashante’s pubic bone applying firm but gentle pressure as she pushed the child’s head beneath the bone. She looked at Mar to apply pressure where she had instructed.
The child’s head slowly began to emerge from Nashante with each painful contraction of her muscles. The midwife looked up at Mar. “Soon it will all be over. Healer be ready for both of them.”
