Dylan slowly and cautiously removed his hands when Sonia proclaimed it safe. He eyed her with annoyance as he planted himself across from her. "You should have known how I would have responded." He huffed out, focusing his attentions on the rabbit meat, if only to hide his embarrassment and humiliation. He removed their dinner from the fire, grateful that it hadn't burned. "honestly, how did you think I would react?" He asked her, slightly flushed as he began slicing the meat for them.

Sonia waited patiently as Dylan prepared their meal. She was so hungry at the moment, she might have eaten the entire thing by herself. She smiled and shook her head slightly as he huffed, but became lost in thought. "I thought you would act the same way any man would act," she said. "I thought you would just stare...I've been so used to it, I suppose. I've never actually been respected since I became a slave, and I was a child back then."

Dylan let out an exasperated sigh. "You're not an object for men to gaggle at, Sonia! You're a person! Who deserves every amount of respect." He finished cutting the meat and passed her a plate. He even put some dried fruit on it as well for her. "And...and...I'm not just any man too...I would never treat you like you were dirt." He added, with a slight blush, and then quickly began eating his food just to shut himself up to avoid any more intimate comments.

Sonia sighed and nodded as Dylan spoke, accepting the plate he offered her. "I suppose that's true," she said. "It's just that I'm unused to being respected...or even really thought of as a person." She began to eat her food, a bit thoughtfully as Dylan told her he would never treat her like other men. She noticed his blush, and a sly smile crossed her face. "So you didn't enjoy my little joke?" she asked him. "Not even a little bit?"

"Well, you better get used to it!" Dylan proclaimed to her after finishing a bite. He nearly choked on his food at Sonia's question. Another red blush covering his face. "I'm going to bed!" He declared after recovering from his violent coughs, running away from answering her question. "Good night!" He tossed the bones of his food into the fire and grabbed his rolled up bedding. Unrolling it, he placed himself into it, feeling as if the Hadraac Desert's harsh sun was burning him.

Sonia was sent into another fit of laughter as Dylan choked in response to her question. His responses never ceased to amuse her. She continued eating as he recovered, watching as he settled into his bedroll. "You know, desert nights are often very cold," she said, her voice still teasing. "We may have to get cozy with each other in order to stay warm." She laughed softly again as she followed his example, disposing of the remains of her dinner and readying her bedroll. As she settled in, she gazed at him thoughtfully. "Dylan," she said, somewhat softly. "Thank you. You managed to distract me from some rather dark thoughts." With that, she closed her eyes and allowed herself to drift to sleep.

Dylan was thankful that it was dark. He was sure he was as red as Marola's or Gianna's hair. "I, I, I, think I can manage, thank you." He stuttered out, trying to erase inappropriate thoughts from his mind. Sonia was his friend and he would treat her with respect!! After all, she was experienced in a lot of things, he doubted that she would want to waste time on an amatuer like him. He let out a sigh, trying think of tomorrow and the anticipation of hurting those men that abused Sonia. His thoughts were interrupted from Sonia's quiet whisper. He smiled to himself. "You're welcome, Sonia. I'm glad that I could help." He told her, feeling good that he helped her in some way. "Good night." He muttered to her, stifling a yawn.

As Sonia woke the next morning, the same three thoughts that always came to her rang within her mind. I am free! She smiled as she stared out at the vast landscape, the entire world that was now hers. There was so much that she longed to see and do, and as soon as she made her peace with life through her vengeance, she would accomplish everything she set out to do. She rolled upright and glanced at Dylan, seeing that he was still asleep. Well, as long as he was still resting, he couldn't protest her going for another swim. It was another exercise that left her feeling so wonderfully free that she could never get enough of it. She undressed again and entered the water while the first rays of sunlight crossed over the horizon.

Dylan let out a yawn as he awoke. He rubbed his eyes from its sleepines as he got up to prepare for the day. He was still sleepy when he heard some movement in the water. Not thinking, Dylan glanced over. His face went red again. "SONIA!" Dylan exclaimed and slammed his hands on his eyes again. The image of her swimming naked woke him up completely. He turned from her again. "Some warning would be nice!" He called out to her, burying his head in his blankets.

Sonia glanced over when she heard Dylan yell. It seemed he was awake now, and quite energetic for this hour. "So, you would have liked for me to wake you up in order to tell you that I was going to swim again?" she asked. "I thought you just as well would have liked to keep sleeping." She looked back at him again and rolled her eyes, though she was still laughing. "Get your face out of the blankets and start getting some breakfast ready. We need to get moving before too long." She left the water and grabbed one of her own blankets, wrapping herself up in it to dry off.

"Well a warning would have been nice when I got up!" He huffed out, and began gropping toward the burnt out fireplace. He sidestepped his way toward it, keeping his back to Sonia the whole time, fearing of what he might see. He flopped himself down on the log and began making some food for them, all the while grumbling about how to make horseshoes, once again distracting himself from the image of the woman behind him.

Sonia dried off and dressed, although she was half-tempted to remain clothed solely with the blanket as she approached him, just to see how he reacted. Perhaps she would try it at some other time...Images of ways to tease him would not stop leaving her mind as she joined him. Her expression became more serious as she thought about what they were soon going to face. Those animals were going to be slaughtered today. "I hope..." she said, staring in the direction they were tracking the slavers. "I hope someone from the carriage is still alive."

Dylan was glad when Sonia came back dressed; a twinge of relief was evident. He stirred the pot of rabbit stew he had made as she let out her somber hope. Dylan remained silent for a moment, staring at the swirls being made in the liquid. "Aye. Me too." He finally said, but by his tone, he doubted it. The carriage was in ruins and the massive amount of blood didn't ease his doubt. "I just hope we find that little girl alive...and whole." Dylan replied. "Here you go." He passed her a bowl.

Sonia made a noise as Dylan expressed his hope. She doubted very much that the men had left the little girl alone, as she remembered what had happened to her. The only hope she might have would be if any other, older female was still alive, as the older ones were more likely to hold the men's attention. She ate her stew dispassionately, her expression blank. "Why?" she asked after a long moment of silence. "What is it that makes some men perform such barbaric acts, treating women as if they were merely objects? What makes other men so respectful and kind?" She glanced at Dylan, wishing for an answer, but not really expecting one.

Dylan tried to ignore the noise that Sonia made, but in his heart, he knew that she was right. He just hoped they would get there in time before they died. Dylan remained silent for a bit more after Sonia expressed her question. It was a good question, one that Dylan wondered from time to time. Were they not all the same in some way? What could make people turn out a certain way? "I suppose," Dylan broke his silence, "its the hate that they have in their hearts. If we allow the hate to fester, I think, we would become corrupt and anger. We want others to feel our hate, so we go and harm others. But, if we choose to overcome that hate, and seek forgiveness and happiness, we end up turning better than we could image." He continued to stare at the swirls in the pot. "I mean, take myself for example. I grew up as a slave, but I was taught by those around me to respect others. Even while I was tortured for those few years..." His paused, recalling the constant torture, "...I don't hate them...but I don't love them either...but, I've learned to accept what has happened and learn from it, to let go of the pain so that I can help protect others...I think that's the answer...we can either choose to hate or just let it go, and that dictates on who we become." He glanced up, finally, to look at Sonia. "We choose to be who ever we want." He gave her a small smile and then handed her a bowl of stew. "Eat up, we got a big day today."
