Tylon poked his head out the window and glanced at the ground far below him. He took a deep, steadying breath, trying to build up his nerves. It was now or never; if he didn't go through with this, he would be stuck with guard duty the rest of his life, protecting the Queen Mother no matter his personal feelings. He knew he couldn't live with himself if he ever managed to be faced in an impossible situation. He knew the army was recruiting now. He was a few months away from the age requirement, but he hoped they would allow him in anyway. He also hoped they wouldn't ask too many questions about his identity. Either way, he knew they needed fresh bodies. The evidence of war had come to the public, and the Queen Mother had convinced them to march to Alagaesia's defense.
Gingerly, he stepped out the window onto the ledge beneath. He clung to the sill. Thane and Tatiana were distracting Mother and Father right now, but he didn't know how long they could distract them. Hopefully just long enough.
He'd written a note, which he placed on his desk before he made this little venture. It read:
Dear Father and Mother,
I'm sorry for sneaking away like this. I would have liked to tell you in person, but I was afraid--am still afraid--that you would prevent me from leaving. Don't be severe on Thane or Tati, either. I asked them to distract you.
I'm going to join the army. The Queen Mother's announced that we'll be marching to war soon, to defend Alagaesia against the Shade Rider. I want to be among them, to help defend my people.
I know I have been primed for guard duty over the course of my life. I am supposed to protect the Queen Mother with my life. I would be ready, willing, and able to do so if it were not for my dear sister. I know in my heart that I love her more than any other woman in our family, and so would give her priority, even if it meant betraying our ruler.
I hope you understand, and will forgive me for running away. My biggest regret is being unable to say goodbye to you in person. I hope to see you all again someday, but until then, may the wisdom of fate guide you.
With much love,
Tylon.
Slowly, carefully, Ty shinnied down the side of the building. He wasn't as used to climbing as Teza Mae was, and it took him a while before he felt safe enough to drop to the ground. Once he did, he looked around carefully, hiding behind a fountain while the guards changed shift. When there was no one around, he made his way out of the city, to head towards Jumor to be recruited there, where he was less likely to be recognized.
