Melantha wrapped her cloak tightly around herself in attempt to keep warm. The snow had finally settled on the ground so she decided to take the opportunity to go into the village to buy supplies.
As she walked her boots sank into the cold snow with each step she sank deeper. At one point she was knee-deep wadding through the ice-cold snow. It was then she regretted not taking Andromeda's offer to fly her closer to the village. The Villagers knew Seth and her self were riders and that they lived just outside of the village in the forest, mainly to give Andromeda and Abaddon space to move.
But her main reason was that she wanted Dubhan to have somewhat of a normal childhood, if the Villagers were constantly reminded that he was the son of two riders she was afraid he would be treated differently by the other children and adults.
She finally reached the village greeting the two men shovelling the snow off the main paths.
"Good day mam." she heard them say.
She gave a small nod and walked on to the market.
She went to get the meat first, of course they could hunt and easily catch and grow their own food but she felt it was important to support the local farmers and hunters especially in such treacherous weather.
The wintertime was always a hard time but this winter the there was something menacing about the cold chill brought on by the snow.
After finishing with the butcher she bought a bag of rice and some dry wood for the fireplace. Seth would have to come into town later to pick up whatever she couldn't carry. She had made him stay home with Dubhan, Usually the three of them would go out together to the market but the Weather had been unpredictable the last few days until today the weather had settled down so she decided to take the chance to go into town. It was still too cold for Dubhan to go out side, she preferred he stay indoors where it was warm so he didn't catch a chill so she decided to go alone.
Just as she was about to leave the village a man came running up to her, she recognised him from earlier one of the men shovelling snow off the road.
“Excuse me mam there’s two solider in the tavern looking for you and Seth say’s they are one of Nasuada’s knight hawks on official business you better go see what they want.”
“Thanks Bert I will.” She nodded to him good-bye and headed in the direction of the village tavern. Her mind wondering what it could it possibly be about.
Their lives had been quiet and mostly normal for the past few years ever since Dubhan was born. Of course she felt guilty for not taking on more duties as a rider but after the war all wanted to do was settle down with Seth and just experience some normality in life or at least as much as they could get and she had gotten her wish.
She wondered if Nasuada had her men track them down because they had gone off the radar for so long. But why was sending out her soldiers on message delivery errands, it had to be something serious.
She gripped her shopping tightly as she entered the tavern. All her thoughts vanished when She spotted them. Two Night hawks one Dwarf and one Elf sitting in the corner of the tavern, they saw her as well and rose from their seats. She greeted them nervously. “Me lady we have come to inform you that Nasuada has requested you and your husband’s presents in Llirea immediately.”
She blinked at him stunned “ what? why?” was her first question. She could tell by his tone it was serious but she couldn’t help the feeling a little bit like they had intruded upon the normal life she had built.
The elf spoke this time in a whisper “We cannot divulge that information at this point in time. We must leave tomorrow once the storm settles”
Slightly annoyed she looked towards the door and then back to the Elf noticing the tavern was completely empty
“We have a small child, we cannot just get up and leave so easily.“ She said in a lowered tone hopping that at least one of them would understand.
She watched as the elf and the dwarf looked at each other both with frowns on their faces. They remained silent, which could only mean they were having a privet conversation in their minds then finally the elf spoke.
“Nasuada did not anticipate this.”
“aye she did not” the dwarf added
“Regardless, as riders you and your husband have sworn oath to protect This land, You must answer the call of your queen, unless your alliances have changed in which case there is a penalty.”
She could tell the Elf was getting annoyed with her the way he spoke and she was growing increasingly annoyed with him. His last remark-hit home it was as if he had known of her history, her alliance to the Empire was not by choice, she had sacrificed a lot to leave and it had taken a lot of strength to flee to the Varden as a young rider.
The dwarf seemed to disapprove of the elf’s comment “Forgive him my lady we are exhausted from our trip, you haven’t been exactly easy to find, please take the time you need but know that it is imperative the that Nasuada speaks with you both as soon as possible, we will be here waiting for you both to depart when you are ready“ she heard him say.
Slightly annoyed she nodded and left the tavern in silence. She knew she had duties as a rider but not being told what was happening made her angry it wasn’t going to be easy to just pack up and leave with a small child though they had travelled with him before it wasn’t an easy task.
She was half way up the path out of the village when it began to snow and then the wind hit almost knocking her off her feet.
Her hair flew around as she shiverd carrying the sacks of shopping.
At one point her boot sank so deep into the snow that the snow came up to her waist. Melantha was forced to use a spell so she could escape before sinking further.
Her mind was busy wondering why Nasuada had sent her night hawks to retrieve Seth and her self, what was so important that she needed them, her thoughts worried her by the time she reached the front door she noticed was shivering from head to toe. She looked down to notice the bottom half of her clothes were wet from the snow.
Melantha put down a bag and reached up to the door handle but her hands were shaking and her gloves just seemed to slip off the handle each time she tried to grab it. “Seth come help me with the shopping!” She called out her teeth chattering from the cold. She pounded on the door “Dubhan Wake daddy up!” she yelled.
