(OOC- I know that I'm taking on a pretty serious challenge by applying for this character, but I managed to play him once and I think I can do it again! I just kinda summarized the story with a few of this site's main plot points mixed in for his history. Please do tear this thing apart if you feel the need just be sure to tell me what I did wrong if you find something, please, XD)
Your username: Jaxrond
Character's name: Eragon Shadeslayer
Character's age: 30-35
Character's attitude:
Eragon is one who was forced to grow up quickly. He is still a fairly young man in the eyes of all the races but is respected as a leader and hero across the lands. Eragon has proven himself to be wise and resourceful not only as a fighter but in the realm of the classroom as well. He is capable of carrying a grudge, even sixteen years after satisfying his need for taking revenge on the Ra’zac. This part of his personality may be fed by his bondmate’s more violent tendencies. He is curious, always looking for new things to learn, and proved himself to be a quick study. This has factored into his teaching as well, as he ignites within his students an eagerness to learn by his mannerisms. He is known to be stubborn, and sometimes even obstinate, in his personal opinions, though this has tempered somewhat with age. Now, rather than displaying obvious obstinacy, he is more adept in working with words to state his opinions in a more peaceful manner than previously. Though, he is no less willful than he was in his earlier years. Eragon is a responsible individual with a great deal of natural charisma and a heart that works for the good of others. He dislikes fighting immensely, preferring his new role of teacher over his previous one of warrior. He has found a good amount of peace and joy leading the New Order of Riders, but, he does still miss his homeland.
Character's Race: Human-Elf Hybrid, having been made so during the Blood-Oath Celebration.
Character's appearance:
Eragon is described as being of average height and having brown hair and brown eyes. Due to his transformation at the Blood-Oath Celebration, he is “fairer than any human, and more rugged than any elf”, something caught between the two races. He has a sharp face and pointed ears, much like an elf, and moves with the same grace. He is pale and has been described as both princely and beautiful in appearance.
Character's allegiance: Dragon Riders
Weapons: Eragon uses the sword Brisingr, which he forged himself with the guidance of Rhunon. He is also very skilled with magic.
Other Info: Eragon has been named Elf Friend and he is a full member of the Dwarf clan, Durgrimst Ingeitum. He also has rather good relations with the Urgals.
History:
Born of an affair between Morzan’s wife, Selena, and his sworn enemy, Brom, Eragon seemed fated from birth to leave a mark on the world. His mother hid him away with his uncle in Carvahall. There, he grew up with his cousin, Roran, working on his uncle’s farm and growing up as a small-town boy with little knowledge of the outside world. This changed when, due to circumstances that he did not comprehend at the time, a blue ‘stone’ appeared before him. After unsuccessfully attempting to trade this ‘stone’, he decided to keep it. Within a short amount of time, a dragon had hatched, revealing the object to be not a stone but an egg. It was at this time that the farm boy’s destiny changed. The moment he first touched the dragon, he was branded with the Gedwey Ignasia, the mark of the Riders. Eragon successfully kept the presence of his new dragon, whom he named Saphira, a secret for some time, understanding what would happen should the Empire ever discover her. However, something as large as a dragon, a race meant to be extinct, is difficult to hide for long. Eventually, word got out and the Ra’zac came in search of the dragon, having been hunting her egg after it was stolen from Galbatorix. The Ra’zac killed Eragon’s uncle, Garrow, and burned his home to the ground.
Eragon fled the village with Brom, who, at the time, was known only as an old storyteller to the new Rider. Eragon was set on taking revenge for his uncle, and, together, he and Brom traveled across Alagaesia, toward the city of Dras Leona. During their travels, Brom trained Eragon in magic and swordsmanship. During their hunt for the Ra’zac, the pair ended up in Teirm, where they met with Brom’s longtime friend, Jeod. It was also while in Teirm that Eragon met the werecat, Solembum, and the herbalist, Angela. While he learned to read and write in Jeod’s house, it was from Angela that Eragon received a prophecy the witch discerned from reading his fortune. This prophecy was one that followed him throughout his future years.
After leaving Teirm, Eragon and Brom set out for Helgrind, still pursuing the Raz’ac. In the meantime, Eragon had begun to have visions of an imprisoned woman, who was later revealed to be Arya, princess of the Elves. When the party reached Dras Leona, they found the Ra’zac waiting for them and were forced to flee, aided by a mysterious newcomer named Murtagh. During the escape attempt, Brom was fatally injured. As he was dying, he revealed that he had once been a Rider and imparted to Eragon seven words in the Ancient Language. He also bequeathed him what had once been the Rider Morzan’s sword, Zar’roc, and his own ring, Aren. Together, Eragon and Saphira buried their mentor, the latter using a rare show of magic to turn his tomb to diamond.
Now joined by Murtagh, the pair decided it was in their best interest to find and join the Varden. They traveled to Gil’ead, hoping to find a contact who could tell them of the Varden’s location. However, upon reaching the city, Eragon was captured by the Shade, Durza, and held in the same prison that contained Arya. Fortunately, Saphira and Murtagh were able to rescue both Eragon and Arya and, as a group, they fled south. Their flight took them through the Hadarac Desert and to the Beor Mountains, pursued by a small army of Kull. During their flight, Eragon made contact with Arya, who was in a comatose state at the time due to poison administered during her time in captivity. It was she who led them to the entrance of Farthen Dur, where the Varden were hidden. After gaining entrance to Farthen Dur, Eragon and Saphira were welcomed, Arya granted medical attention, and Murtagh imprisoned due to his heritage as Morzan’s son. During the short interlude spent with the Varden, Eragon proved himself proficient in magic and swordsmanship. It was also during this time that he blessed the child Elva, not realizing that he had actually placed a curse on her.
Shortly after their arrival, the army of Urgals invaded Farthen Dur with Durza commanding them. Eragon fought alongside the allied Varden and dwarves for some time before finally coming into confrontation with Durza. The Shade dealt him a debilitating blow across his back, however, Saphira and Arya intervened before a death blow could be delivered, shattering the Isidar Mithrim in the process. Taking advantage of Durza’s distraction, Eragon stabbed him through the heart, thereby killing him. When Durza died, his hold on the Urgals broke, causing their forces to scatter. After the battle, Eragon was treated and survived his killing the Shade, though the wound on his back rendered him less than whole.
Following the battle, Ajihad, leader of the Varden, was killed in an ambush while ensuring the enemy was routed. At this time, Murtagh, who had accompanied Ajihad after fighting alongside the Varden, disappeared and was presumed dead. Nasuada, Ajihad’s daughter, rose up to take her father’s place as leader, at which point Eragon swore his allegiance to her. This was followed by his adoption into the Durgrimst Ingeitum clan, making him the first human in history to ever join a dwarvish clan. Directly afterward, he departed to train in the elves home in Ellesmera, seeking out The Mourning Sage, who had contacted him as he was falling unconscious after his battle with Durza.
The Mourning Sage was revealed to be a Rider named Oromis, who had hidden away from Galbatorix after being captured and tortured a number of years prior. Together, he and his dragon, Glaedr, trained Eragon and Saphira in the ways of the riders. Both Eragon and Oromis suffered from their previous injuries, and, occasionally, this slowed their training. While in Ellesmera, Eragon trained further with the sword and magic, becoming much more skilled in both. His skills improved drastically after his attendance of the elves Blood-Oath Celebration, where he was healed of the injury given to him by Durza and made to be more elf-like.
Eragon left Ellesmera after discovering that the Varden and the Empire were to meet in battle upon the Burning Plains. He and Saphira returned to fight alongside the Varden. He assisted Nasuada in forming an alliance with a number of Kull before the battle was joined. During the battle, Eragon’s cousin, Roran appeared with the survivors of the village of Carvahall, which had been destroyed by the Ra’zac. It was also during this battle that a Rider on a red dragon appeared, fighting on the side of the Empire. Eragon fought the red Rider, who was revealed to be Murtagh, and lost. Murtagh then revealed to Eragon that they were brothers, sharing a mother, and, by extension, both sons of Morzan. Murtagh took Zar’roc with him when he left the battlefield, leaving Eragon without a Rider’s weapon.
Following this battle, Eragon agreed to go with his cousin to rescue Roran’s fiancé, Katrina, who had been captured by the Ra’zac. Eragon, Saphira, and Roran invaded the Helgrind, and, through a hard won victory, destroyed the Ra’zac and their steeds, the Lethrblaka. Eragon then sent Saphira on ahead with Katrina and Roran, remaining behind at Helgrind in order to deal out a punishment of his own making on Katrina’s father, who had played a part in the destruction of Carvahall. He sent the man to Ellesmera by compelling him through his true name before returning to the Varden on foot. There, he was met with the news of the arrival of a copper dragon and a large clutch of eggs. It was a source of great hope not only for the Varden, but for Eragon personally as well.
After his return, Eragon again battled Murtagh, this time with the aid of a number of elven magicians who had been sent to assist him. Following the Varden’s victory in this battle, he oversaw the marriage of Roran and Katrina. Having stepped fully into his capacity as Nasuada’s vessel, he was sent to Tronjheim, where he oversaw the choosing of the Dwarves’ new king, as their previous king had been killed by Murtagh on the Burning Plains. During his time with the dwarves, the clan Az Sweldn rak Anhûin attempted to assassinate him. After proving their guilt, the clan and their Grimstborith were banished and ignored. It was partially due to this that Eragon’s friend, Orik, was chosen as the next king. This allowed for a strong alliance between the Varden and the dwarves.
Eragon then returned to Ellesmera for additional training as the Varden waged full war with the Empire. There, he discovered that Brom, not Morzan, was his father and that Murtagh was only his half-brother. It was at this point that Glaedr revealed to his pupils that the source of Galbatorix’s power rested in the Eldurnari he had captured during the Fall of the Riders. Glaedr entrusted his own Eldurnari to the pair, as he and Oromis planned to march with the Elves on the city of Gil’ead. While in Ellesmera, Eragon and Saphira made a bargain with the Menoa tree for brightsteel hidden under her roots. With this brightsteel, and the help of the elf smith, Rhunon, Eragon forged his own sword, Brisingr.
Eragon joined the Varden in their battle for the city of Feinster. There, he and Arya again faced a Shade, though, it was she who struck the death blow this time. During the battle, through Glaedr’s Eldurnari, Eragon and Saphira witnessed the death of Oromis at Gil’ead. Glaedr’s physical body was also killed, forcing his consciousness into his Eldurnari.
The Varden successfully took Feinster and pressed onward through the Empire. It was at this point in time that a number of Riders cropped up, including the Ancients. Their guidance and wisdom provided him with further teaching as he fought alongside his fellows.
Eventually, they reached Dras Leona, where, again, they met Murtagh and Thorn in combat, though, only briefly. Eragon, Arya, Angela, Solembum, and an elf named Wyrden entered the tunnels beneath the city in order to unlock the gate from within. Wyrden died in the tunnels and Eragon and Arya were captured by the priests of Helgrind, who intended to feed them to a pair of newly hatching Ra’zac. Angela arrived in time to kill the Ra’zac and save her two comrades. During this skirmish, Eragon lost the Belt of Beloth the Wise, which had been in his possession for some time. Despite the setback of their capture and loss of this artifact, the mission succeeded and the Varden took Dras Leona, forcing Murtagh and Thorn to retreat.
After the battle of Dras Leona, Murtagh attacked once more and captured Nasuada. Eragon failed to stop this from occurring and was left as leader of the Varden. With their forces quickly nearing Uru’baen, Eragon was led by Solembum’s prophecy to the island of Vroengard, accompanied by Saphira and Glaedr. There, they approached the approached the Rock of Kuthian, and, after spending some time of reflection, were able to enter the Vault of Souls by using their true names to open the door. Within the vault, they found hidden away a number of Eldurnari and dragon eggs. Though wary at first, the majority of the Eldurnari agreed to accompany Eragon when he faced Galbatorix and left the Vault with him.
Eragon confronted Galbatorix in Uru’baen, however, the Mad King had discovered the true name of the Ancient Language, thereby gaining power over magic itself. Even with his allies at his side, Eragon could not defeat Galbatorix and was forced to fight Murtagh for the king’s amusement. Finally, the two half-brothers agreed to work together. Murtagh spoke the Name of Names to remove Galbatorix’s wards and Eragon and the Eldurnari cast a spell that forced Galbatorix to understand the suffering of others. Arya then killed the dragon Shuikan, whose death, compounded with the spell, drove Galbatorix to commit suicide.
When the time came to fill the power vacuum Galbatorix had left behind, Eragon supported Nasuada’s rise as queen, refusing the crown himself. He then decided to fully reinstate the Riders, which he felt he could not do if he stayed in Alagaesia. He left his homeland, and his love, Arya, behind and ventured East with Saphira. There, he founded New Doru Arabea in the land he named Bromsland.
With the help of the Ancient Riders and other elders, Eragon opened a formal school at New Doru Arabea, based off the original one on Vroengard. There, he began to truly train Riders as the Grand Master of the Order. At the time of the Shade Uprising, Eragon remained at the Academy rather than venturing back into Alagaesia. He has been reluctant to do so due to the prophecy that he was fated to leave and not return. Recently, he disappeared for a fairly short time in response to an attack in the north of Bromsland. This was followed by some time spent flying the border between Bromsland and Alagaesia, observing what had occurred there. Despite these brief jaunts, it is his Riders who have intervened in each battle, and he has yet to personally join the war against the Shade army.
Name: Saphira
Race: Dragon
Age: 16-20
Attitude:
Saphira has always been a wise dragon who is constantly ready to assist her Rider whether physically or with her words. She is also very proud and has a wide streak of vanity. She is very blunt in giving her honest opinion and seems to have little regard for the hierarchy of others, having only shown respect by bowing to Islanzadi, who was queen of the elves at the time. She even struggled with calling Oromis and Glaedr ‘master’. She is a ferocious combatant who enjoys fighting as much as Eragon dislikes it. Her bond with her Rider is a deep one, and she focuses mainly on Eragon’s safety and, to a lesser extent, happiness. Over the years, her extreme protectiveness has spread to her students and descendants, though, as is the nature of the Rider-dragon bond, this is not to the same degree as her protectiveness over her Rider. Unlike her Rider, she has not mellowed much with age because it is the nature of a dragon to mature quickly. Though she has gained experience, she is much the same as she was sixteen years prior.
Appearance:
Saphira is a magnificently blue dragon with sapphire eyes. Her numerous spikes are bone white and line the trail of her spine, from her forehead all the way down to her tail. She is built for aerodynamic flying. Oromis commented that he had never seen a dragon so naturally suited for the sky. Despite being built more for flying, she is also incredibly strong, perhaps one of the strongest dragons ever seen.
History:
Saphira’s eggs was one of the three in Galbatorix’s clutches. It was stolen from him and ferried between the elves and the Varden for a time as they searched for a Rider. On one of these ferrying trips, her carrier, Arya, was attacked by the Shade Durza. Arya sent the egg away with magic, causing it to appear before Eragon. She hatched for him, thereby choosing him as her Rider, and has been with him since that day.
Role Play Sample:
Eragon hardly noticed the cold air that whipped through his hair as he and his bondmate soared above the clouds. He was dressed appropriately for flying, in thick clothes that insulated him against the chill. That, and, he was used to it. After more than sixteen years of flying with Saphira, how could he not be? The pair still flew together at every chance, when the duties of teaching or, now, war did not call them away. At that thought, he frowned, dark brows drawing together in an expression of distaste.
He and Saphira had fought so very hard against the Empire and Galbatorix, risked so much. And he hadn’t been alone. The others, the Riders and Varden and dwarves and elves and Urgals who had fought alongside him, had risked much as well. And, sometimes, they had lost. He felt a pang in his chest as he remembered the bloody battles that had led to the peace Alagasia had experienced for sixteen years. All the lives they had taken…
Do not follow that path, little one. It leads only to darkness.
Saphira’s voice pulled him from that train of thought before it could carry him too far. His lips quirked just slightly. Some things would never change.
I know. Thank you, my friend.
Saphira rumbled in response, beginning to coast on the wind, steadily losing altitude as she prepared to come in to New Doru Arabea. Eragon pushed his thoughts of the past away, instead choosing to focus on the present. He had been away for a short while, seeing for himself what the Shade army had done in Bromsland alone. They had not stopped at the border, that much was clear. He had left the school in the capable hands of his Elders, knowing that those like Lucian and Tismri would keep things going in his short absence. Reports from the battlefield were simply not the same as seeing things with ones’ own eyes, and he wanted to know what his Riders were facing. He had been gone a week or so at most. At least, he thought so. In all honesty, he was having difficulty keeping track of time. It seemed that not aging was taking its toll already. When he looked in the mirror, he saw a face that was no different than the one from sixteen years prior. Saphira laughed, a grinding sound emitting from within her.
You are far too young to be feeling old, Eragon. What shall you do when you are as old as the Ancients?
Eragon winced just slightly. The Ancients were all extremely pleasant and he enjoyed their company, but, he couldn’t even imagine being that old.
I’ll tell you when I get to be that old.
This seemed to amuse his bondmate further.
The pair broke through the clouds. Suddenly, her thoughts tinted with that hint of thrill that told Eragon she was about to do something acrobatic. He gripped the saddle horn before him tightly. Her spikes had become far too big to be proper handholds as she continued to grow. Without any further warning, the blue dragon tucked her wings and dove, corkscrewing in a freefall. Her thoughts were jubilant as they careened towards the ground. Grand Masters or not, she still felt entitled to have her fun. And Eragon would never be the one to stop her. Her joy was contagious, and he found himself grinning as she suddenly arched, pulling up and timing the snap of her wings so as not to dislocate them.
The dragons around New Doru Arabea trumpeted their greetings as the pair came in for a landing at one of the many platforms that dotted the Academy. Saphira dropped down in a clattering of talons and rustling of scales. After a moment, Eragon unhooked the fastenings that held his legs to the saddle and slipped down from her back, landing with a dull thump as his boots struck the stone. Briefly pausing to stroke a hand along the scales of Saphira’s neck, he then entered the Academy, knowing that it was likely that he had already been sensed and would soon be engaged by someone who had a matter to bring to his attention.
