With the scorching heat of summer gone came the icy breath of winter. The land becoming coated in ice and snow making it a winter wonderland much to the delight of children or adults with a child's heart. Richards mind was on other things besides fun. He sat at a wooden desk in a rickety chair looking over a map of the local area around the nameless village he now found himself in.
It was plagued by a monster that came in the dark of night killing and devouring any it found and not even spared the children. Richards order were no stranger to monsters. They were created for the very purpose of protecting humanity from the things that go bump in the night. They had come to this country with the mad king but sadly were to few. Not for lack of interest. But few survived the trials of training. On average only 1 out of 10 recruits survived.
From all the evidence he gathered Richard was pretty sure the monster was not a kikimora, or a dreget. He had come to conclusion it was a Warg. A twisted wolf like creature that would make a dire wolf look like a puppy. These monsters were not made by magic but nature. Generations of inbreeding and mutation made these monsters. But Richard knew mankind had a part in that. Lost lands, wolf packs overhunted and left with small family groups. Inbreeding would happen. And such were born Wargs. Mankind makes there own monsters.
Richard was not thrilled with the beast he had to hunt down and slay. But such was his purpose, no matter how hard it seemed. With a plan in mind he stood up and donned his red cape and left the warm cozy confines of the village inn for the snow swept outdoors.
