History:
Neona was born in Urû’baen to a woman named Melody but she had never known her father. When she was five her mother took her on a trip to Bullrige to find work. On the return trip a group of bandits attacked them on the out skirts of the city. A local soldier patrolling heard the commotion and found her crying over her mother’s broken and wounded body and took her home while his comrades attended to the woman. The next day he learnt that the woman did not make it through the night. He had planned to take her to the cities orphanage the next day but his wife persuaded him otherwise. Convincing him that the last thing the poor scared girl who had just lost her mother needed was to be thrust into a home with no loving parental figures.
Ajax and Kendra where unable to have Children of their own after many tries so Ajax took the unfortunate fate chance and agreed with his wife raising Neona as their own daughter.
The first few years living with the new family where filled with confusion sorrow and sadness at first she didn’t understand where her mother was and waited for her to come and find her even after Kendra had explained in the most gentle way that her real mother had died and that she shouldn’t be scared because they wouldn’t let anything happen to her.
Kendra soon found an outlet for Neona to take her mind off her loss for at least a little while, she taught her basics of magic in secret. Neona learnt that Kendra had been magician healer but hid her talent from the empire. She first learnt how to levitate very small objects under strict rules to ensure her safety
Neona learnt quickly by the age of seven she could perform most basic spells and by the age of ten she was fluent in the ancient language and had a more than basic understanding of magic and knowing her boundaries. Her adopted mother would teach her to block attacks on her mind and how to find loop holes into others minds. She knew one day all the things her adopted mother was passing on to her would come in handy some day. As much as she loved her adopted parents but still felt the lingering sorrow of the loss of her birth mother but as she grew older she began to develop a greater understanding and became thankful that they had been generous enough to take her in and call her there own.
When she turned thirteen the local bread maker caught practicing magic in an alleyway and reported her out of fear to Empire officials. Soon after Empire soldiers came knocking at their door step and forced her from the house and locked her in a guarded cell. Ajax Infureated cleared up the mix up with his general and commander insisting that it was ridiculous to even think a 13 year old girl was a Varden spy.
After two and a half days not realy knowing what was going on Neona was taken to the castle and told to demonstrate her magic skills like her life depended on it otherwise she and her family would face imprisonment. Instead of what she feared they were impressed at her skill and introduced her to some of the empires spell casters and dragon riders and told that that she would train under them. She trained with them for three years as an apprentice and an assistant strictly only allowed to visit her family every second Sunday.
At Seventeen she was sent away on a job, travelling with soldiers and two other magicians to provide first aid as the traveled around the land to try and gain support for the empire from the Ladies and Lords of the other cities. On her travels she fell in love with a neutral rider named Solaris while travelling to Furnost.
She met Solaris while exploring the city, she had entered a trinket shop hoping to find something for her parents but before she could decide between a crystal babble and a sapphire necklace for her mother a thief grabbed her from behind and held a dagger to her throat and continued to threaten the shop keeper with her life forcing him to hand over the shops gold. Solaris had been passing by and saw the commotion through the shop window and rushed into the store. Alerted by the wind chime on the door chiming, the thief was momentarily distracted by the new comer giving Neona the opportunity she needed. Muttering a spell rapidly under her breath she caused the bone in the thief’s arm to break.
Pulling away from him she felt the knife slip and cut her throat unlike she had planned. Griping her throat and kneeling on the floor she healed the wound saying the words in her mind as Solaris wrestled with the thief and knocked him out cold after giving the thief one last kick he rushed to Neona and inspected her confusion glancing at the blood looking for a wound. Unable to avoid it Neona told him that she had used magic to break the thief’s arm and to heal herself and to her surprise he informed her that he was a dragon rider. Solaris insisted on following her around the city to make sure she was okay. Neona felt a certain comfort about being around Solaris, comfortable enough to tell him anything.
After their first meeting Solaris arranged to meet her in secret during the three nights she stayed in Furnost. She enjoyed his company and his stories of adventures, they exchanged spells, stories and he showed her some basic moves with the dagger she took from the thief.
She soon learnt more about him having no real close family so he lived and travelled around with nomads. He and his dragon Xanthe followed her to each city saying hidden meeting with him in secret outside after dark to avoid alerting the soldiers she was travelling with. Neona met with Solaris more and more until it was time to say goodbyes and go back home to Urû’baen.
Soon after arriving home she fell unexpectedly ill. She experienced severe nausea and when using magic her energy would drain far too much and too quick for even for simple spells. Finally upon a visit to her parent’s house her mother pieced together the symptoms together, she was pregnant. As soon as she had discovered she contacted Solaris who flew over the next day
It took little to convince Solaris to move to Urû’baen so they could stay together to raise their child. She helped arrange an agreement that allowed Solaris and his dragon stay in the city while providing minor services to the empire and taking Neona’s place and performing her duties with the other spell casters.
As soon Solaris had arrived her parents arranged for them to get married. It was a quick ceremony in a small clearing in the forest with very few guests; her parents hoped that no one would notice the speedy wedding and that their daughter was pregnant. Neona and Solaris did not care to much who knew because they where head over heels in love but it soon became a whole lot more complex with a baby on the way.
The times when Solaris and Xanthe where away where the most painful, Neona had so many worries already that she became sick with dread every time they had to leave for missions or duties. Kendra her adopted mother would do everything in her power to take care of her pregnant daughter, anything to easy her pain or discomfort. She would constantly be reminded that worrying wasn’t good for the baby but her heart felt incomplete without Solaris.
Neona’s worries soon came to life when Solaris and Xanthe did not return home on time. She spent two sleepless nights waiting for them. Finally on the third night heard a knock at the door, rushing out of bed she answered the door to find her husband bandaged and bruised supported by two men on either side who entered and set him down in the closest armchair. The sight of him made her heart almost stop she couldn’t believe what she was seeing. she rushed to him and hugged him tightly with the intent of never letting go but something seemed off he didn’t hug back he hadn’t spoken a word there was no love radiating out of him just sorrow.
Tears poured from her eyes as she watch his do the same, she knew something more was not right. She looked around her heart was racing she looked outside the open door and rushed around the house as fast as her pregnant body would take her.
She checked all the windows hopping to find the yellow dragons head perched on one of the windows tired and battered but she was nowhere to be found. Where was Xanthe were was the yellow dragon her heart was pounding she could hardly breath and on top of that she could feel the baby kicking hard against her stomach. The commotion had woken Ajax and Kendra who with force had to set her down in a chair to calm her down. Neona stared at Solaris pale emotionless face and call his name hoping that he would be responsive but nothing.
Ajax stepped outside with the two men who had brought Solaris home to learn what had happened while Kendra examined Solaris and tried to calm her daughter. When Ajax returned her thoughts where confirmed, Xanthe had been killed as their camp was ambushed by a large group of Urgrula and Kull Solaris had barely escaped.
Neona watched as her husband recovered physically but his mental state stayed the same even after the funeral memorial. Stress was on as she approached her due date. She spent most of the time in bed beside Solaris talking to him desperately trying to get a response. At first his mind had been totally closed off but with the help of her mother she had gently over time been able to ease her way in and gain entry into his mind.
When she first made contact his mind felt alien the absence of Xanthe was obvious. She then understood how alone he was feeling but she was with him and there was no need to feel alone, she let him know that over and over physically and mentally embracing him hoping for some sort of response. It took some time before he made some movement to acknowledge her placing his hand on her belly and kissing her fore head. Slowly with her presents in his mind Neona watched him recover but she knew the void within Solaris would never be filled.
Time went by and Neona’s stomach swelled to the point where she need help getting out of bed because she had trouble supporting the extra weight of the baby. Early one morning she woke at sunrise to find Solaris standing by the window staring out at the sun rising. She noticed fresh tears pouring from his face and she hated seeing him like that so she pushed herself to get up out of bed. As she rose planting her feet on the ground and took a step towards her husband something inside her gave way. Neona let out a shriek in horror, surprise and pain and fell forward. Solaris turned and caught her before she hit the floor and lifted her back into bed as she called for help.
Fear and panic once more took over her entire being, the baby was coming but weeks too soon and it was all her fault was the only thing she could think. Kendra ran in and started ordering the two men around getting Ajax to fetch towels blankets and warm water while she made Solaris sit behind Neona to keep her slightly propped up. She felt Solaris’s mind with hers and his arms wrapped around her shoulders, she could feel his chest moving on her back as he breathed and she could feel his chin softly resting on top of her head. The fact that he was there and trying to comfort her eased her fear even if it was only a small amount.
Her family did everything in their power to deliver the baby in full health and she insisted that the baby’s safety and health came before her own.
Kendra worked all morning feeling the baby’s health with her mind before anything happened while Ajax fetched two of Neona’s work friends who were also healers to help Kendra construct spells.
When they arrived the baby was well on its way and Neona was feeling the strain of waiting and several times the pain became almost too much but there was nothing she could do to stop it without using energy that she didn’t have.
After an hour and a half the pain was subsiding but her worry had spiked the baby was too small to breathe on her own Kendra and the other spell weavers had devised a spell that would help the child breathe until she could breathe on her own. The energy from the spell would be taxed from whoever was in the same room which meant at least one person had to be beside the baby at all times
By midday Neona was exhausted and ready to fall asleep in Solaris’s arms but she couldn’t help but stay awake to stare at the beautiful baby girl in her arms. Ajax had carried Kendra back to their bed room after she had collapsed from using up too much energy and the other two healers were making tea in the kitchen. Neona discussed names for the baby girl with Solaris until they both agreed on Melantha.
As Time went by he watched her baby daughter grow into a young woman. Solaris condition was ever changing some days he would be reserved and not say anything and some days he would speak but not make much sense and other days he would be better. Sometimes she would be lucky and he would let her in his mind, it broke her heart when he shut her out but she knew his mind too well to not know how to get in through the week point, it pained her to do so but she needed him to know she was there and he needed to know that he was not alone he had a loving wife and daughter.
Neona hated seeing him broken she wished her daughter had seen him before he had fallen ill before his dragon had died.
As a Mother she juggled looking after her daughter, her husband and home.
When Melantha was three they moved out of her parent’s home and into a small cottage outside the castle the house had been given to them as a form of compensation for her work and her husband’s losses. She need to work and earn and income and living so close to the castle made it easy to travel to and from home if there was an emergency.
The empire was trying to get on her good side as they knew how skilled she was at magic and how valuable she was to them. She was unsure of their agenda but she was sure that without the money she wouldn’t be able to feed and clothe her family.
Just when things had finally settled down in her life her sixteen year old daughter became the newest dragon rider. A messenger passed on the news to her while at work writing a complex spell, she rushed down to the town square where she found her daughter surrounded by a crowd of children and in her arms was a newly hatched dragon. Neona approached moving through the crowed she watched as her daughter looked up at her with sheepish grin ear to ear. Neona didn’t know how to react simply because she knew she should be feeling happy for her daughter yet she was afraid of losing her and afraid of what it would do to Solaris. Bringing a dragon back into his life after so long would be a constant reminder of ***** and the worst part was her daughter did not know her father had been a dragon rider.
Neona smiled back at her and looked down at the black dragon snuggled up in melantha’s jumper it reminded her of the day Melantha was born and how happy she had been she wasn’t going to let her fears ruin the feeling for her daughter.... TBC.
