History: Allan Saddler married his first wife, Ell, in Therinsford. He was a horse breeder, and people across Alagaesia came to him to buy horses. He traded quite often with the townsfolk of Carvahall. He specialized in more than just horses, though. He created saddles, for luxury, for lords, and for poorer folk. He also trained horses and broke them for those who would buy. When Ell became pregnant, she grew sicker and sicker. When at last it was time for her to give birth, she died after the child had been delivered safely. Allan named the girl Ellie, after her mother. Ellie learned all of her father’s traits. Afraid that Ellie should be alone if he died suddenly, Allan created a hidden blade for her, and asked Ellie to wear it at all times. So that Ellie did not think he gave it to her because he thought her a damsel, he told her it was for her to stop thieves and horse smugglers. Ellie took it gladly and became efficient in its use, although she had little reason yet to use it. When Ellie was fifteen, the winter brought a stranger to their door. It was a woman her father’s age, and she was traveling with her daughter. Apparently the stranger’s husband had passed earlier that year, leaving her widowed and without a means to support herself or her daughter, Cara. Allan and Ellie decided to let the two stay with them for the winter, so long as they helped around the ranch. When spring came, Allan married the stranger. Ellie became close with Cara. She had never spent much time with a girl her own age and she found a new sort of kinship in it. She taught Cara to be more independent, as the girl was quite the opposite of Ellie, more dependent and like a delicate maid. Life went very well for the family until the attacks at Carvahall began. Worried that the attacks would spill into Therinsford, Allan decided they should relocate. The next day Urgals attacked Therinsford. Ellie hid with Cara, protecting her step sister. Allan and his second wife perished in the attack. In the week that followed, Ellie gathered the horses now left to her. Gathering her father’s tools as well, she left Therinsford with Cara and the two of them travelled to Gil’ead. Knowing that her step sister was more accustomed to city life, Ellie left her at the inn they stayed in. She had taught Cara to be crafty and independent. She would do well by herself now. Ellie moved on, to find a smaller place to live where she could continue her father’s craft. She eventually settled down in a village near Leona Lake. She writes letters to her step sister from time to time, but they have fallen more and more out of touch.
Role Play Sample: Ellie stood in the ring, a whip in her right hand. The gelding that trotted around the ring tossed it’s head, flicking the silky mane. Raising the whip, she cracked it over the head of the beast, causing the gelding to begin to trot. She was putting him through his paces. This horse was her pride. It was descendent of her father’s original stock, and it was the gelding she would take as her own. His coat was an almost fiery red when the sunlight rested on it. The mane was a shocking white in contrast. Ellie had not yet named him, but naming would come after her first ride with him. Breaking the horse came first. A whinny behind her in the pasture caught her attention. Looking briefly over her shoulder, she noticed that the herd was moving oddly, towards, the far gate that led out to the countryside. Squinting, she saw a man on horseback rounding them up. Eyes widening in alarm, Ellie let the whip fall to the ground. She was being raided! Cursing the horse smuggler, Ellie looked at the gelding. “Don’t throw me off!” she shouted unceremoniously at him. Approaching the horse, she grabbed a fistful of its mane and swung up onto its back. It frisked at her weight, bucking slightly. “Steady!” she said, squeezing her knees into its ribs. From years of horseback riding, Ellie knew how to steer a mount without reigns or saddle. Riding a still green mount this way was only slightly more difficult. Heeling the horse forward, she directed it out of the ring and towards the horse smuggler, who seemed unaware of her. When she drew closer, he looked behind him, having heard the thudding of her horses hooves. Seeing a woman riding towards him on a wild looking horse seemed to make the smuggler smirk. Eyes growing fierce, Ellie urged the horse faster. It drew up to the flank of the smugglers horse. He glanced at her, the smirk fading a bit. Moving quickly, Ellie leaped from the back of her horse, landing dangerously behind the smuggler. A second later her hidden blade was thrust through his ribs, stopping his heart. The smuggler slumped in the saddle, and Ellie let him fall off to the ground. Taking the reigns of the horse she now rood, Ellie drew it up to a smart halt. The herd in front of her slowly calmed, and then slowed all together. As if nothing had happened, the horses bent their necks and continued grazing. Breathing a sigh of relief, Ellie turned her new mount around and trotted back towards the fallen smuggler.
