"Here, kitty, kitty," Same said to the small kitten hiding in the back of the kennel. He was the runt of the litter, and solid black. Those two were the only reasons why he hadn't been adopted yet, and he was the last of his siblings left. He wished his dad would allow him to take the little guy home, but Makie was allergic to cats. "Come on, you little rascal, you gotta eat, and then I have to get to the pool." He offered the can of tuna to the kitten again. The kitten looked around the small cardboard litterbox he was hiding behind, little green eyes wide. Same tapped the can. "Come on, either you need to start eating, or I'll be stuck here until Gianna shows up." The kitten didn't budge...

Walking into the shelter, Gianna pulled her hair into a quick but sloppy ponytail. It was a hot summer day and she was already sweating. By the end of the day she would be a complete mess. But it would be worth it, helping the animals. "Hi Carol." she said to the lady at the front desk. "Hello Gianna. I'll just sign you in."
"Thanks." Grabbing the required apron that served as the workers and volunteers uniform, she deftly threw it on and tied the strings behind her back. As she did so, she noticed Same near one of the kettles, trying to coax the small kitten from his hiding spot. Smiling at his efforts, she walked over to him and knelt down beside him. "I don't think he's interested in Tuna." she said, holding a hand out for the kitten to sniff.

Same glanced up when Gianna appeared at his shoulder, giving her a small grin. "Really? I thought all cats liked tuna." He took the can out of the cage and sight. "I think you're getting just a little too old to live on milk, little guy, as much as I'm sure you love it." He looked over at the cans of cat food they had piled nearby, wondering which the kitten would want to eat. "Maybe he'd eat..." He read the name on the can he grabbed, "Turkey Dinner in Gravy?" He made a face. "I honestly can't tell the difference, so I wonder how they can." He sighed and opened the can. "We had to put down old Rita today," he said a little sadly. Rita was an old dalmation they'd had in the shelter for several months. It seemed no one ever wanted to adopt an older animal.

Same's news caused Gianna a wave of sadness, and an almost crushing guilt. Whenever an animal was put down, she felt she had someone failed them personally. If only she had done something different, tried a little harder to find a home for them. Gazing down at the ground, she fought back the tears that threatened to expose her feelings. A lot of people thought it was ridiculous to cry about an animal that wasn't theirs. But Gianna had known this one, had known her sweet demeanor and easy affection. "I'm sorry to hear that." she said softly. Blinking rapidly, she gestured to the can in Same's hand. "I think he likes the Turkey dinner." she said, as the kitten had crept up to sniff the fresh food.

Same clenched his fist, feeling a bit upset. He'd been the one asked to put the dog down. Why was it that he could shoot a target with deadly accuracy with any sort of gun his father owned, but when it came to actually killing something, his heart would stop? He'd felt like he'd betrayed the animal when he'd placed the needle in her. "I hate this," he muttered, "Why is it that everyone goes to a bit fancy pet store to get a new puppy or kitten and go to all the trouble of training and housebreaking them when there are some perfectly trained, loving creatures waiting for a home right here?" He stroked the small black kitten's back as he came and sniffed the contents of the can. He relaxed as he started to eat. "That's a good kitty," he murmured to him. "I wish I could take you home. If only Makie wasn't allergic to you, I've have a ton of cats and dogs." He shook his head. If Makise wasn't allergic, he was sure his dad would find some other reason not to let Same have anything other than a goldfish.

Gianna rolled her eyes, thinking about her own adoptive parents reaction if she were to bring a cat home. Neither of them were allergic, but they hated animals for reasons Gianna couldn't fathom. Yes, they cost money, yes, they required cleaning, but wouldn't that be worth it for an animals undying loyalty and affection? "You and me both, Same." she said with a sigh. Stroking the kitten's back, she wondered at the fate of him. Hopefully someone would come in and take pity on the poor creature. "I think most people think of shelter animals as damaged goods. That's why they don't want them. They've been raised with misconceptions that these animals aren't trained, that they're feral and ill behaved. It's a sad thing, that's for sure."

"Sad and completely stupid," Same said, shaking his head. "I think the animals in here are better that the million dollar showdogs that are pampered. I don't know, these guys just seem somehow more genuine." His watch started beeping at him and Same stood up. "Rats. I have to get to the swimming pool now. I have the entire afternoon lifeguard shift." He took off his volunteer uniform. "I guess I'll see you tomorrow," he told her, waving to her and Carol as he went out the door. He got in his car and drove down to the city's pool, groaning when he saw the parking lot jam-packed. It wasn't surprising, as hot a day as it was. But he noticed most of the cars belong to high schoolers, including some trouble-makers who never listened to his whistle. He'd had half a mind that if one of them started drowning he wasn't going to save them.

Sitting on the edge of the pool, Meera dangled her feet in the refreshing water. Her hair was tied back neatly in a French braid, and her skin was glowing with a perfect tan. She was flanked on either side by friends, who were pretty but not quite as stunning as herself. Or so she liked to think. Her bikini complimented her figure nicely, she thought also. She had bought it recently and was happy to finally be trying it out.

"Cannonball!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Daemon yelled out, jumping into the pool. The splash he created was epic, as well as the protesting shrieks he heard from his sister when he rose. "You moron!" Saenon called to him from where she sat at the edge of the pool. Daemon only grinned at her and went under the water again, swimming toward her. He grabbed onto her ankles as he rose again. "Why don't you join me, sis?" he asked, tugging gently, "The water's cold." "I think you just answered your own question," Saenon replied, trying to kick him away, though without much energy. Daemon's grin turned positively evil. Saenon's eyes widened. "Don't. You. Dare," she told him. Daemon grabbed her arms and yanked her in. She surfaced and splashed his face. "You jerk!" she yelled. Daemon gave her an innocent look, then swam over to where Meera sat with her friends. "What about you, Meera? You wanna join us?"
