Jeriah awoke suddenly, aware that all was not well. She looked around the room, which was brightened by the light shining from her. She looked at Lathem. He was still asleep. She smiled at him, then leaned down and kissed the side of his face. Then she got up and dressed. Something wasn't right, she could feel it. A presence she had not felt in a long time was near at hand, only this time, Kalri was something different...darker. She quietly slipped out of her and Lathem's huge treehome in the Spine and went to find Kalri. She had known in her heart that this day would come...and was dreading it. OOC: this is about a year after Jeriah and Lathem finally tied the knot. Here's the thread for you, mica! Let's have a fight! lol!

Kalri felt the presence of the light, she rose silently from her bed as the feeling came over her. She turned to see Mar sleeping quietly beside her. The smile crept across her lips as she thought she would suffer a thousand forms of torture to be able to feel his arms around her. It had been ages since she had given up her quest to find Jeriah. She had suffered greatly at the hands of her father for her failure but Mar had been there, comforting her. It was all that she could do to prevent him from rising against Galbatorix in his rage. She had made him swear in the ancient language not to interfere. Not yet. She hated seeing the pain in his eyes when he looked at her.
Kalri felt Legion stirring. ‘Not now Legion. It is not yet time. You will have to wait.’ She knew that a conflict was on the horizon, a fight between the light in Jeriah and the darkness within her. She had known since that day in the throne room when she allowed Legion to take over to do her father’s bidding. She sighed softly as she looked over at her love lying within her bed. She knew Legion and Galbatorix would never allow her this happiness forever. Eventually they would be found out. The weight of it hung to her like a stone bound around her neck. Mar’s love for her, his touch was the only thing that could call her back from Legions grasp and even that was starting to fade as Legion became stronger. Kalri let tears roll slowly down her face as she gently kissed his forehead and gathered her things. She made her way through the secret passage to Mar’s room. Sabonth looked at her with knowing eyes.
‘Where do you think you are going little one?’ Kalri looked to Sabonth as she gently stroked the red star upon her forehead. ‘Away for a while. You must stay here and I am severing our bond.’ Sabonth raised her head in objection but before she could bring voice to her words Kalri silenced her. ‘We will be bound forever within my heart my friend but I am going to my destiny and will not sentence you to the fate that awaits me.’ Sabonth watched Kalri as she severed the bond. Tears rolled from the great dragons eyes. ‘I will be yours forever little one. You may have severed this bond but there is other magyk at work here.’
Kalri kissed her dragon upon its great snout. ‘I love you Sabonth. You are free. Do as you will. You can remain at the castle or go where ever your heart desires. No one will oppose you.’ Sabonth lowered her head as Kalri walked from the room. ‘Our journey is not yet done little one.’ She said as she returned to her slumber, a slight smile curled upon her lips.
Kalri made her way through the castle grounds and saddled her black mare. Heeling the horse gently she headed off into the night, her destiny calling her toward the coven.

Jeriah walked slowly through the woods, not knowing where she was going except toward Kalri. Oranthor still lay asleep and she gently severed the bond between them. Her heart ached again and she wished she would not have to do this. All she really wanted now was to live in peace with her love. She continued walking...walking toward her destiny.

Kalri rode throughout the night and most of the next day. She had left her sword with Mar back in her room. She carried only her daggers and throwing knives for protection but she knew she would not survive this confrontation. She had dreamt it many times and every time, she had perished in the end. She rode slowly. The journey would take at least two more days. She stopped near a stream and set up camp in a small grove of trees. She let her horse out for the night. She would return when called for. Kalri unfurled her bedroll and started to set up camp.

Jeriah rested a while before continuing. By now both Lathem and Oranthor would know she was gone, and would probably guess why. Still, she pressed on. Like Kalri, she had had dreams about this confrontation, though they were mostly just flashes of light and dark. There was the ringing of steel against steel. Then it would all go dark; she was unable to see anything farther. Still, she had to go, and she was unafraid. At her side she wore the amber Rider's sword she brought with her from the world beyond. Gedwey Garjzla, she named it. Shining Light. She had no other weapons with her; she left her bow at home. It would not be needed. Soon. Very soon. The day was almost upon them.

Kalri lay upon the bedroll, her face up to the night sky, watching the stars. Mar had taught her more about the stars than any of the coven witches. His knowledge about things amazed her. Her eyes held sadness in them as she thought of him. She wondered if he knew what she was doing, where she was going and why. She hoped that he would not follow but yet, that he would. She would like to see him one more time before she died but that was for Wyrda to decide. Wyrda. Her life seemed to have ruled by fates other than her own. 'Everyone makes their own fate.' She heard Mar's words as clearly as if he had been next to her. That may be true for others but not for her. Others had a hand in her fate before she had even be born, setting her path firmly so that she could not avoid it no matter what choices she had made. She gave a long sigh as sleep took her into the place of her most beautiful dreams and her deepest nightmares.

Jeriah let out a soft sigh as she rested on the ground, missing Lathem's warm embrace. Her only love, besides Oranthor. She would die for him; she did die for him. And now it seemed she may have to do it again. She felt as if her heart were beating rapidly and knew Lathem was looking for her frantically. A shining tear fell down as she began to sing.
Du Weldenvarden, with her piney trees, Ellesmera, with her vast and timeless halls, can never measure up to my home within the Spine. My home where my heart lies.
Farthen Dur, with his hollow base, Tonjheim with his splendorous wealth, Is worthless compared to my home within the Spine. My home where my heart lies.
There were many more verses she sang, all telling of each place considered grand and lovely in Alagaesia, but none of them could compare with the simple beauty of her home with Lathem. As she last phrase left her lips, she fell into a deep sleep, where she dreamed on Lathem, her mind only on her love this night. OOC: sorry about the random song. I'm in a LotR mood, where they love to randomly burst out singing. lol

Lathem ran through the forest, his eyes full of desperation and his expression full of dread and worry. "Jeriah!" His voice rang out through the forest as the quiet serenity shrank away. Zamah flew over head, letting loose roars of fury and desperation as much as Lathem. The large dragon had come to love the girl as much as Lathem, caring for Oranthor as the brother he never knew. Maybe they were brothers. Lathem suddenly stopped, a small quiet voice coming from a clearing a few hundred yards away from the boy who had recently turned into a 17 year old man. He immediately recognized the voice and waited a few moments before joining in, his and her voices ringing out in the forest like a clear bell. Moments later, after the voices stopped, he stepped into the clearing, the girl of his dreams lying in the middle, sleeping soundly. He smiled faintly and walked forward, touching her forehead with a gentle kiss. Zamah. I found her. Go tell Oranthor she's fine and in my care. Zamah agreed and flew away, leaving the two alone. Lathem brushed Jeriah's hair from her forehead and sat down next to her, his deep purple sword laying across his knees. He smiled down at her and began to sing the song again, the forest his accompanist.

Jeriah smiled slightly in her sleep, sensing her love near. Oh, her heart ached to hold him close and never leave him. The girl of seventeen, married to the only man she ever loved. She opened her eyes and saw him sitting nearby, singing their song. The amber specks in her blue eyes flashed and her radiance grew until the whole clearing was as bright as day. She was happy he was there, but she knew he could not go with her. She felt Kalri coming nearer, knowing her darkness and Jeriah's own light would crash. If Lathem or Zamah or Oranthor were there, they would get caught in between and never get out between the two. She sighed. "Lathem, you know the time has come...You know I need to fight Kalri alone." She touched his hand gently. "I love you, Lathem. I have since the day we met."

Kalri awoke as the sun came up slowly on the horizon. She washed in a nearby stream, ate then headed once more toward the coven woods. She walked her horse as the day grew long. Her thoughts always returned to the same thing. Mar.

Lathem felt a tear cascading down his cheek. (OCC: Woo! Crying again! lol) He held her hand against his face and sighed. "Aye, my love. The time has come...I only hope that you are ready." He held his head up to the moon and closed his eyes. The air was crisp and refreshing, though that didn't matter. He was there with the only one he had ever loved; that was all that mattered. Though, he knew it would not last. For she was to go fight Kalri and only God knew who would return to their lovers.

Jeriah touches his face gently and wiped away the tear that fell down. "Please don't cry, love," she told him, giving him a kiss, "If I don't return, know that I will see you again, in the place where no shadows fall. Remember that, Lathem, and remember that no matter what happens, I will always love you." The pain of her scar at that moment was a testament to that. It hurt so badly to leave him behind, an almost unbearable pain. Yet through that pain her light shone even brighter. They lay together all through the night, just spending their last few hours together, dreading the dawn that came all too soon. As they sky began to lighten, Jeriah said one last goodbye to her love, her life, her everything. Then she stood and straightened and began walking again. As seh left, without a glance back, a song she remembered hearing long ago sprang into her mind and out her lips. "The Road goes ever on and on Down from the door where it began. Now far ahead the Road has gone, And I must follow, if I can, Pursuing it with weary feet, Until it joins some larger way, Where many paths and errands meet. And whither then? I cannot say."

Kalri mounted her horse as the sun reached its zenith in the sky. She rode slowly in silence as the terrain began to change to that of forests. She would be in the woods of the Spine by the next evening at this pace. Her heart grew heavy as she felt an overwhelming sense of dread come over her.

Jeriah walked through the forest until she was stumbling out of exhaustion. The pain of her scar was hurting so terribly because she left Lathem behind. She leaned back against a tree to rest. She looked around herself. She didn't recognize this part of the Spine. She and Lathem had never wandered this far away from home. She noticed some lodges settled into the forest nearby and felt as if someone was watching her. But she stayed put. Something told her that Kalri would come by here, she here she would stay until it was time.

Kalri rode most of the day. As night fell she came into the coven grounds. She rode toward Nashante's lodge. She needed to confront her mother one last time.
