Elaine folded her hands together, glad that all the sad topics were, for the moment, going to be pushed aside. "Right, good idea." With a hand and a finger, Elaine tapped the side of her head. "Now, I think it best to teach you how to block your mind." She eyed Jeriah askance, wondering about her. Maybe the young rider already knew how to do so? "It's not exactly magic, but most of the magicians are left to teach it. Do you know how to do this already?"

Jeriah nodded to Elaine. "It was one of the first things Lathem taught me when he began to teach me. I think it's probably one of the most important things to learn, so you don't get taken over by another person who would control you. I'm not especially good at it," she said. Actually, she was excellent at it, but she was always a very modest girl and hardly ever took pride in anything she could do.

Elaine smiled widely. "Excellent! Just practice it daily to strengthen it." Pleased that Jeriah already new the technique, Elaine ran through the information in her head, determining what was the next most important thing to teach. She finally settled with teaching Jeriah just the basics of summoning the magic and using it. "We'll begin with Adurna, which is water in the ancient language." She pointed to the dainty fountain in the middle of the lush yard. "Focus your power onto the water in the basin. Try to draw it up and out."

Jeriah knew how to do this, so she looked into the water, accessing her magic and focusing on the water. "Adurna," she said. Slowly, an orb of water rose out of the basin of the fountain. She turned the orb into a rope and twisted the water into a knot before letting it fall back into the basin. Deep within her mind, she heard Oranthor give a small chuckle and say, Show off. She shook her head. She wants to know the extent of my talents, I will show them to her, she said, trying for his sake to give a small laugh, but not succeeding.

Pleased again with Jeriah's talent, Elaine nodded and tilted her head, considering the next task to give. "Allright. I think you already have a good hold on your magic. I suppose the best way for me to evaluate what you need to learn is for you to show me what you already know." She spread her hands wide, "perform all the magic you know, if it will not tire you too much." Her eyes glanced at the orange dragon at the doorway. Narrowing her eyes, she looked him into a clear cut eye and spoke into his mind. Normall, riders rarely did such a thing out of respect of privacy. However, since she and Eridor were currently their teachers, she would do what was needed. Eridor is waiting for you in the sky! Now go, dragon! It is not polite to keep a master waiting. From above, a low snarl sounded. Eridor hovered above them in the sky, waiting.

Oranthor gave his Rider a final glance, then took to the sky where Eridor was waiting. Sorry I'm late, he said, still keeping a close eye on Jeriah. Jeriah went about proforming as much magic as she knew. She only really knew a handfull of words, but is was enough to make some useful things-especially clothing, such as a shirt she had made for Lathem at one point-and to defend herself if necessary. She proformed little bits of magic she knew until she began to get fairly tired. Then she looked to Elaine for her reaction.

With attentive eyes, Elaine watched Jeriah's performance. The young rider was quite apt in the use of magic. My job won't be as hard as I assumed. she thought, pleased. When Jeriah finished, Elaine bowed her head in respect. "Very good, Jeriah. It seems all I really have to teach you is more of the ancient language. And also how to become aware of everything around you." Elaine gestured to the courtyard they stood in. "I will start with the latter." Waiting for Jeriah to once again be seated, Elaine then began the lesson. The art of expanding ones mind to become aware of everything had at first been difficult fo Elaine. However, with diligent practice, she had finally gotten the tactic down.
Once Oranthor had joined him in the sky, Eridor banked to the left and soared away from the castle. Allright, Oranthor. First, I want you to do a few things for me. He looked at the orange dragon with an eye. A barrel roll, double loops, hovering, spiral dive, and upside down flight.

Jeriah nodded and did as Elaine instructed her. She found it wasn't too difficult, though it was hard to be aware of everything around. However, it was fairly simple to her to reach out and touch induvidual minds. She was amazed at the differences between dragon minds, human minds, elvish minds, and so on. And each mind was unique. Each person had his or her own hopes and dreams, cares and worries. She could only vaugely feel these things, for she refused to intrude upon people's privacy. Oranthor worked on what Eridor told him to do. He was not very flexible in the sky. He could do most of the thing he was asked to do, but afterward, he always had to rest. He had never been through such exercises as these before. But if this were the price for helping Jeriah in any way, he would gladly pay it.

From the distant look in Jeriah's eyes, Elaine assumed that the young woman was getting the hang of the skill. Smiling, Elaine crossed her arms. She is really gifted with magic. I think she will excell quickly. She was eager to hear what Jeriah had experienced in the exercise.
Hovering in the sky, Eridor watched Oranthor go through the air manuevers. The orange dragon performed well, but it was obvious they had tired him. Very good, Oranthor. With more practice, we will build your stamina. Exiting the hover, Eridor dove down, towards a larger courtyard. We will rest for now, and work on something else.

Jeriah finished her practice, then told Elaine what she had experienced. She nearly smiled as she told of what she felt, but, as always happened whenever she just began to feel happy again, her thoughts turned to Lathem. Did he know how to do this? Could she contact him this way? A tear fell down her face and she brushed it away quickly, trying to focus on her lessons. In the other courtyard, Oranthor felt his Rider's distress. He tried to comfort her as best he could, but, like she, he knew he had to concentrate on his own learning. He waited for Eridor to give him a new task.

"Excellent! You are progressing much faster than I expected." Clasping her hands together, Elaine asked, "but can you tell me of the animal presence you felt? Human, elves, dragons, they are all fairly simple to connect to, as their minds are not so different than yours. But animals, they think on a different level. Mainly just instincts. Hunger, thirst, survival. Once you can expand your mind to all these things, then you will have mastered the art."
Eridor landed in the courtyard beside Oranthor, folding his wings to his side. Can you breathe fire yet? he asked.

Jeriah looked as Elaine, understanding what she had said, but having trouble comprehending it. She was still trying to get her mind back on the present and off of Lathem. It was harder than she thought. He seemed to come to mind every few minutes, and her worry for him increased every time. "So, do you want me to try again?" she asked. In response to the question, Oranthor raised his head to the sky and released a long burst of flame. He had practiced on breathing fire ever since he had aquired the talent. After a minute and a half, he stopped and turned his eyes to Eridor. "Yes, I can."

Eridor inclined his head. Very good. Raising his head, Eridor released four alligned lines of fire from his mouth, letting it rage for only a moment. You can fork your fire in all different manners with your tongue. You can even control the size of the flame just by the way you set your mouth. Now, try it.
Elaine frowned. Obviously, Jeriah's attention had re-focused on Lathem. "You can try again whenever you like, wherever you like." Suddenly, an idea formed in her mind, one that would, hopefully, ease Jeriah's pain. "Lets move on for now. I will teach you to scry!" Standing, Elaine beckoned Jeriah over to the round fountain. "When you scry, you focuse on what you want to see most. For example, I imigane you want nothing more than to see Lathem. Think of him, of his face, of his every feature. Then speak these words." Elaine spoke the scrying words softly, so as not to trigger her magic. "Repeat them and stare into the water. If done right, an image of your man should appear." She smiled. "Don't worry, scrying doesn't take too much energy."

Lathem woke up suddenly, laying in a pool of blood. "Wha...." He looked down at his chest and saw the cut in which his sword had stabbed into him. "I'm still allive? Geesh, what does it take to kill me?" He looked around and saw his bloodied sword laying next to him. He sat up and was surprised that he felt no pain. He picked up his sword and sheathed it, shaking his head to clear his vision. He felt around with his mind and was surprised to feel the presence of Jeriah. "Jeriah?" His mind felt numb and he couldn't think. He walked away from the bloody alley and walked into the courtyard of King Orrin. He followed the presence of Jeriah and stopped. He stood behind a tree and peeked around it. She stood with another woman at a round fountain. He could here the woman softly talking but his gaze was locked onto Jeriah. He turned around and sat down with his back against the tree. "Jeriah.......I've missed you." OCC: Lathem tried to commit suicide in another thread, so I decided to show up here. He was in Surda when he tried to commit suicide and yeah.....lol sorry if I totally ruined your guys' idea.

OOC: well, you'll have to explain how you got all the way from Uru'baen to Aberon in the space of a week, but other than that, we can work with this...lol, I'm about to scry Lathem, so I'm gonna see that you're here. This'll be interesting. Jeriah suddenly got the strangest feeling. She turned quickly and gazed around the courtyard. Her eyes settled on a tree nearby. Using her lessons from moments ago, she focused her mind over there. Lathem...? She nearly ran across the couryard to him, but something stopped her. What if he was here on a mission from Galbatorix, to capture her or persuade her to join him? She knew her love was right there, and it was agonizing to choose whether or not to go there. Oranthor was busy trying to direct the flames from his mouth in various ways. Suddenly, he nearly forgot all about that and focused his mind on Jeriah. She was distressed. After a minute, he found why. Oh, no... Jahag saw Lathem enter the courtyard. in boy form, sneaking around to keep from drawing attention from the two women, he approached the boy. What are you doing here?" he asked.
