Simon rushed to his sister, relieved to see her. "River, next time, will you please tell me before you go off?" he asked her. "I was just going for a walk," River said, though there was a distant look in her eyes. She was still trying to quiet her mind from all the voices. No matter how hard she tried, they were still there. Simon sighed. "Come on," he told her, "Let's go back to our room." He put his arm around her and led her back, glancing at Elaine as they passed her. "Thank you," he said as they left.

Caleb cleaned up his house, then fell asleep quickly, thinking about what had happend today and the new friends he had made. "Thank you Jeriah, your friendship means more than you think." he thought, not trying to keep it from anyone, but not directing it to anyone either.

Jeriah soon arrived at her room and opened the door, reflecting back on her day. Wow, Oranthor, today's really had it's ups and downs, she said. So what are you on now? An up or a down? I think I'm fairly high up at the moment. Good, he told her, I am glad to hear it. "I hope that guy found the girl he was looking for," she said aloud.

"You're welcome," Elaine told Simon, watching him and River walk off. Trying to decide whether or not to try teaching River now to block her mind, Eridor nearly shouted in her mind. Do it now! She won't be able to get any rest anyways. Spurred on by his urgent tone, Elaine broke into a run to catch up to the siblings. Coming in front of them, she focused her eyes on River. "I have an idea. River, picture something strong in your mind. Like a tree, or a wall. Focus on that image with all your strength."

River looked curiously at Elaine, hearing her words and struggling to concentrate on them through all the noise in her mind. Think of something...with all your strength... She knew exactly what she most wanted at the moment. She thought of her home. She thought of it as hard as she could. The other sounds quieted as she thought of it, though they did not go away entirely. She at least knew what she was thinking at the moment. She looked in amazment at Elaine. "They're...they're not as loud now," she said. A little smile flittered across her face; she was glad to have something that would quiet them down, even though they were still there. ~~~~~ Months later, Jeriah started packing. She had gone from a soft, broken-hearted girl to a strong, determined warrior. And her determination? To find Lathem. To find him and break him from his promise to Galbatorix. To have her love back. She had already asked Nasuada for permission to search for him. Well, more like told her she was going whether Nasuada allowed it or not. Jeriah thought she had picked up Lathem's trail through magic and was going to track him. I wish you would let me go with you, Jeriah, Oranthor said. Jeriah sighed and stroked his nose gently. I am sorry, dear friend. I need to find him alone. I don't know his current condition, and seeing you might scare him away. I only hope I can bring him to his senses. She put a sword at her side, turned to the door, then looked back and said, I will send for you when I've found him. You and Jahag both. Then she went out the door to find the lost love of her life.
STORY CONTINUED ON "EMPTY."
