Elyria, out of breath, smiled softly. She told him through her mind 'I'd say I'm caught up for now.' "What's up?" she asked smiling widely, laughing to herself.

Kalri looked at Caleb. She smiled at him again. Taking hold of his hand once again she asked him, "Tell me about us Caleb. Help me remember. Were we happy together?"

Mar smiled at her. 'Good,' he told her with his mind.
"Well, the sky is up," he said. "The opposite of down, the sun, clouds, birds, many things are up." He laughed, kissing her head softly. "I'm just here to keep Kalri safe."

Elyria laughed softly. "Okay now tell me about Kalri. You know the Varden is after her."

Kalri looked at Caleb thinking. "Yes I do remember something to do with chasing." She looked at him with a smile. Suddenly, she tapped him lightly on the shoulder. "Tag!" She ran off laughing waiting to see if her would chase her.

Caleb laughed and took off after her. They ran all over the woods until he finally caught up to her. "Gotcha!" Caleb called.

Kalri squeeled with delight as he caught her. Turning to him she was laughing. An expression of joy upon her face.

Elyria listened as Mar spoke. "What happened to her besides getting hit by the branch. Something else had to have happened first. Tell me everything. She is not the same girl that I have heard stories about. Mar, the things I have heard about her scared even me. I do not scare easily."

Mar sighed, laying on the ground beside her, his head propped up on his elbow. He twirled her hair between his fingers.
"Her story is a long and complicated one," he told her, then began to recount all his travels with Kalri, about how she constantly struggled with the darkness within her, about how she sought for something to help her.

"Mar, to hear you tell her story almost makes me feel sorry for her. What do you make of this darkness that she struggles with? Have you seen it?" She ran her finger lightly on his cheek.

He nodded, remembering how horrible it felt, how powerful it was.
"Yes, and it is something from nightmares," he said. "I don't know how she struggles with it, and all I can do is encourage her to fight."

"What do you think it is that she fights? It does not sound like mere madness. Did my aunt or Galbatorix do something to her that made this life for her?"

"I don't know. All I know is that it is inside her, and she fights it everyday."

"Okay but think about this. There is something that happened today before she was hit in the head. There had to be. I know she has suffered blows to the head before. Has she taken anything to control the darkness? Herbs? Anything?"

Mar thought for a moment.
"Well, I gave her a small wooden bear to rub when she felt it taking control. And I think Caleb had drugged her earlier so she couldn't use her magic, which may have put the darkness at bay for a while. I think she may still be affected by it."

"Mar. It's the drugs and the concussion. If he stops giving her the drugs before she regains her memory, the darkness inside her will be freed. Without her memory, she cannot fight to keep it in balance. You have to let Caleb know before the effects of the drugs wear off! Can you reach him?"
