Once Harp was saddled and ready, Mar walked to the side of the castle where Kalri's window opened to the city. He looked up, but saw no one. Sitting down on a small bench, he leaned his head against the large tower.

Kalri returned to her room. She had already packed and Sabonth was ready. She leaned on the sill of her bedroom window, looking out over the city. The darkness within her had nearly killed her. How was she going to master it before it was too late?

Mar let the warm sun relax his body. As sleep was about to take him, he looked up to see Kalri. He could see she was thinking about something. He would not disturb her, he would only wait. If she addressed him, he would speak, but otherwise he would leave her to her thoughts.

Kalri sensed Mar below her. She knew he would respect her privacy. Reaching to him she bade him come to her. She needed to discuss the earlier events with him. To understand.

Mar heard Kalri beckon him. Rising, he nodded to her and made his way through the castle to her room, making sure to take the less populated passages. Knocking on the door, Mar relaxed, taking slow breaths from the trip up the long flight of stairs.

Kalri waved her hand toward the door and it slowly opened to Mar. "I need to speak to you privately before we leave. Please come in."

Mar nodded, then walked in, closing the door behind him. "What is it, Kalri?" he asked formally, standing in a soldier's stance near the door.

She walked across the room to him. Waving her hand and speaking the words in the ancient language she warded the room so they were alone. No one could see or hear. She took him into her arms. Placing her head against his chest she asked him. "Did you see? With the girl? Mar what is happening to me? I took pleasure in what I did. I felt it. And the magic, it almost consumed me. I brought the ceiling down upon myself. I am loosing control. The darkness is taking me."

Mar held her in his arms, placing his hand on her head. He sent her waves of calming emotions. "I saw, Kalri. It is alright. When we are out on the trail, we will practice control. You will learn to master this darkness. Whenever you feel it consuming you," he said, puling something from his pocket. "Rub this. It is a simple carving of a bear, but it will give you strength. Like the power of the bear, it will help you master this darkness so it will not consume you." He handed her the wooden carving, kissing her forehead softly.

Kalri took the carving of the bear. She placed it in her pocket, as she rubbed it, concentrating. Then her tears began to flow. Her heart felt as if it were tearing in two. Remorse hit her like a wave, almost knocking her off her feet. "Sometimes I think it would be better to end this life than to continue this fight!"

Mar wiped the tears from her eyes. "Don't ever think that," he said firmly. "This struggle will only make you stronger. If you give up now, you will leave not only your father, but me."

Wiping her tears, she regained her control. "I fear that this double life I lead is going to rip me in two. This struggle is constant, never-ending. If father finds out..." a shiver ran up her spine. What would Galbatorix do if he found out? She hadn't been quite right since the ceiling had fallen on her giving her a concussion. She retreated in the calming embrace of Mar. He could always calm her. She hated hiding her feelings for him from everyone. 'If anyone found out, especially father...' she pushed the thought from her mind.

Marola thought a long time over whether or not to join Kalri and Mar. After what she saw today, Marola wasn't sure if she liked Kalri very much anymore, and she was sure she would never trust her. But they were friends, even long before it was announced that Kalri was the king's daughter. Because of that friendship, Marola decided to go. She walked over to Rauthr. Tonight, my friend, we will take to the skies! Rauthr gave a mighty roar in agreement, and she gave him a hug. Perhaps someday I will forgive Mar of his rudness. Until then, I shall simply try to forget it.

Lathem tried to smile at the man, Caleb, but it wouldn't come. He nodded at Caleb and then went to the kitchen, trying to busy himself with the dishes.

OOC: lol, to quote one of my favorite B5 characters, "This is the worst case of testosterone poisoning I've ever seen." lol. Jeriah couldn't understand Lathem's reaction. She turned to Caleb and murmured, "Excuse me," then ran to the kitchen. Memories of their many days there flooded through her mind. She stared at Lathem for a minute, then asked, "Lathem, hon, what's wrong?"
