"You know that I knew that you had more daggers, but I wasn't taking them all. I'm not leaving anyone empty handed, not even you. Come to the Varden and I promise that I won't you or let you be harmed." Caleb said.

"Why would I willingly go to the Varden? I will not be a pawn in the Varden's game with my Father. I don't care that you say you won't hurt me." Kalri looked around and seeing no other means of escape decided on the only means left to her. "I will not be used as a bargaining chip against my father!" Looking at Caleb desperately, she did the only thing left to keep herself out of the clutches of the Varden. She looked him squarely in the eyes. Fear and resolve mixed together in their reflection. She took the knives and holding them up,she crossed them just under her ears, she drew them down swiftly and deliberately across the sides of her neck, severing the arteries. The color left her face quickly as she slowly fell to the ground. The blood gushing out from her with every beat of her heart.
Across the great distance a mighty roar was heard as Sabonth felt the life draining out of her Rider. Turning, she headed back to Mar, flying with all the speed she could muster. She knew where Kalri was, and knew she needed help. Time was of the essence.

"nuts!" Caleb said, realizing what the girl had done. Caleb rushed over to her side and saw the life leaving her. He couldn't let her die, even if she was the Empires Rider. "I said either way your an advantage to us, you stupid girl." Caleb shouted. He healed her throat and stoppped the bleeding, hoping that he'd done it in time. He ran his hand over her heart, but didn't feel a beat.

Kalri felt Sabonth as she lie in the netherworld. 'I'm sorry my friend. I couldn't allow myself to be captured.' She felt the dragon touch her as she was pulled back into the living. Caleb had healed her. She could feel his hand over her heart, the warmth of his touch. Slowly her heart began to beat again. Opening her eyes, she saw him looking down at her. His face was kind and there was an air of concern about it. Kalri struggled to make the words come out. She was weakened from the loss of blood. "Why did you save me?" She couldn't understand his actions.

Mar woke to a pounding in his head and the roar of Kalri's dragon. Standing in a rage, he reached out with his mind, contacting Sabonth. 'Where is she!?!?' he demanded. 'We have to get to her. Pick me up!' Sabonth landed in a thud as Mar jumped into the air to land in his bac. 'Let's go!'

As Kalri waited for a response from Caleb she knew that Sabonth had felt her and knew her location. She knew that as death neared the hold of the drugs would lessen as Sabonth felt the bond severing. She would bring Mar and he would rescue her from her captor. She just hoped they would arrive in time.

Mar drew his swords, leaning into the wind. He sent Sabonth orders, emotions, pictures, to make the dragon fly faster. He knew Kalri was in danger, and his oath was weighing heavily on him. If he could not save her, he would die, or wish he had.

"I told you that you were good to us either dead or alive, I choose to keep you alive becuase I don't believe in senseless killing, especially a woman as beautiful as you are." Caleb said. Suddenly, he felt the prescense of the great dragon around him. Caleb quickly slipped the drug to the girl while she was to weak to fight. "Balvir, trick him. Fly away from this location, and hold him off. I'll move in the mean time, and they won't find us. Be careful my friend." Caleb said. Picking up the girl, he ran straight into the woods, headed to his favorite clearing. Balvir took to the air, eager to out fly the massive black dragon on the horizon.

Caleb's words confused her. He had called her beautiful again. Pushing the thought away she remembered that he was a Varden Rider and ultimately saw her as a pawn to use against her father. But, still, why did he save her?
Kalri briefly felt the presence of Sabonth and Mar. They were close. As she tried to reach out to them, still weak from loss of blood, Caleb forced the drug down her throat again. It was bitter and choked her, making her cough as it ran down her throat. She felt the connection slipping as the drugs quickly took effect again binding her magic.
Caleb picked her up as if she were nothing, and putting her over his shoulder he began to run. 'He is strong and...' she stopped herself from the thought. The drug that he gave her quieted the battle between the dark and the light within her soul. She felt none of the internal conflict she had grown accustomed to, only a quiet peace. Returning her mind to the task at hand, she looked around as he carried her off. His dragon had flown in the opposite direction, no doubt an attempt to trick Sabonth and Mar. She needed to do something, but what?
Reaching up into her hair, she removed the decorative beads that were woven into some of the strands. Quietly, she dropped one every few yards as he ran on. The beads were brown, like her hair and did not stand out against the forest floor, but she knew Mar would see them.

Mar told Sabonth to land, then leaped off the dragon. "Go take care of that one," he said, pointing at the other dragon flying away. Opening his mind, Mar searched the area for any signs of Kalri. He found none, only very faint traces. He ran off in the direction the trail led, hoping to move fast enough to see it before it vanished.

Caleb ran quickly, picking up on the man behind him, slowly gaining. "If you call your friend off I'll make sure your returned to him once we're finished with you. I've already given you my word that I will not let harm befall you, and if my actions haven't proved it, then I say it again the Ancient Language." Caleb said. He hoped to just get to General Manning with the girl and try to get some dragon eggs from the King before more hatched for him.

Kalri heard his words. "You know I cannot allow it!" She began to struggle with him, hitting his back with her fists. "I will not be taken to the Varden or anywhere else." With that she put her foot upon his hip and pushed off with all of her strength. She managed to break free of his grip, reaching into her camisole she pulled the last dagger she had hidden. "Thank you for saving my life, but I am afraid I will not go to the Varden today."

Mar ran with all the speed he could possibly muster. Quickly he came upon the two a ways away. Mar had followed small brown beads on the ground, no doubt from Kalri. Stepping forward, he readied for a fight, though he did not want one. "Both of you, hold!" he shouted, making his presence know, just in case they had not felt him. "Now, Kalri, come to me. You! You stay there. What did you want with this woman?"

"I want no harm to befall this beautiful young girl. I just want to get the dragon eggs from the King, that's all." Caleb replied.

Kalri walked to Mar, careful not to turn her back on Caleb. "I'm sorry Caleb but I cannot allow myself to be in the hands of the Varden. I will not be a pawn in this war. I thank you for saving my life."
