Altrasky started forward, his fist raised and ready to dislocate a jaw "My friend, choose your words carefully when speaking to my friends. For when one has the strength of an elf and the anger of a human, if is easy for certain, unfortunate, accidents to happen."

"Your threats do not worry me, master rider. You may strike me dead or leave me crippled. Certainly, you would achieve gratification through brute force, but you would doom your cause in that moment.
Now, you may (or may not) accept and ponder my logic, but I'm offering you freedom and the respect of every town and city in our Empire. Feel free to talk among my guards; they will commit themselves to securing the town from outside interruptions. For now, this town is safe from attack, whether it comes from brigand by defense or Imperial raiding by law. They are also protected under diplomatic nonviolence sanctions, and I entrust the four of you to honor that sanction. Speak to Lieutenant Richard for information and commodities, if you so wish. I have an appeal to make to this town's leader. I beg my leave."

"If a legion descended down on Surda all it would take would be a single word to wipe most of them out," Jaygon said to Therin. "If he wants to stay here so be it. Therin could you go and tell the guards no Imperial leaves the boundaries of this town?" he asked still looking at the Imperial soldiers.

"No need most of these men are not soldiers by profession, they are scared. You realize your guard is comprised of the average man? Probably farmers, potters, and such all conscripts in the army. None of them are battle hardened...wait a minute." Therin said as he noticed one man standing defiantly before him, a towering specimen, a man he knew. "It can't be..." Therin said outloud as he roughly shoved the soldiers put of his way and stood before the giant man. "Dareth?" Therin asked his voice filled with both excitement and anguish.
Dareth stared at the scared monster before him. "How do you know my name scum?" He asked. "How dare you approach a ranking officer to the king after insulting his men, who have served countless battles? You realize we are all warriors from Woodcrest? We would kill you, even if it costs our lives we would kill you." Dareth told the three standing before him, he was confident in his wards, if Kat was Galbatorix's shield as a nonrider, Dareth was his sword. "We will travel where we please argetlam, you have my word no towns will be put under siege. Now Mattheus we should be on our way let us take our leave." Dareth barked as his men gathered their things.

"Hey, hey, hey, HEY! Calm down, you lot! You're all under a diplomatic oath of service! As I am your diplomat, you will all work with these men to make sure this town doesn't burn to the ground while I do my job!
Now; you and this town's garrison WILL work in a joint effort for now! I'll throw in a few words to this town's mayor, and then I promise we'll leave. For love of all that is holy and unholy, why can't you all get over your problems? Now, thirty minutes tops. Think you can keep yourselves from gutting one another?"
Mattheus was starting to lose his calm. It was difficult enough, taking the contempt of backward-town local hicks and making it out alive without violating his doctrines. Now he had war-seasoned veterans trying to snap at each other's throats.

Altrasky lowered his fist. That curt reply was not what he expected. "Fine stay. But I tell you, this town has it's defense pledged for by me. If you try anything, I will kill you." he stuck his hand out to shake. Making a mental note to Therin What's the matter freind?

"Once the thirty minutes are up I will escort your entire party back out of Surda," Jaygon said. Stretching out with his mind he told hidden soldiers, archers, and magicians to stand down for the time being. "We need to send someone to patrol the border just North of here, I suspect this isn't the only thing Galbatorix is sending into Surda," Jaygon whispered just loud enough for the other riders to hear.

Mattheus walked past, forcing a smile, though his eyes were icy. As a trainee, he'd seen Surdan and Dwarven diplomats stride through embassies throughout his Empire treated with utmost respect by all around them. He once sat and dined with a dwarf in Kuasta, and learned much from the diplomat, who spoke of his most gracious greeting and accommodation. Why couldn't these people extend the same grace and poise?! Within minutes, he'd been threatened and branded a criminal. The rider had given him a thirty-minute span, and he intended to keep his limits. However, there were more townsfolk across Surda to appeal to, and the riders were simply going to have to accept that.
Barbaric steel-plated buffoons! They trust more to a bloody battle and cracked skulls than a lawful meeting!

Dareth glared at the old elf "Your race is on the verge of being extinct elf. How does that make you feel? Knowing that your race will disappear to half elf trash and humans. Once your kind is gone we will wipe all other races from existence." Dareth goaded the three elves hoping to start a fight.
"Do not draw on him...something about his eagerness to battle isn't right. He was the most bloodthirsty of my people hr even for him this is strange...its like he is possessed by something." Therin told his comrades.

"Only ambitious fools wish to goad others into a fight. Mind yourself Imperial elves aren't as few in number as you think," Jaygon said. Jaygon walked over a ways and said, "These are troubled times. I'll have to apologize for my behavior towards that diplomat."

The Diplomatic Guard kept to Mattheus's word, fortifying the town's perimeters and keeping utter peace between their ranks and the town's garrison. there was one fight started between a common soldier and an overzealous pro-Varden townsman, but a quick compromise by an officer calmed own the squabble. The garrison was given fresh supplies and Imperial weaponry, while officers provided precious metals and bags of grain to the market.
Meanwhile, Mattheus's meeting with the town's leader went reasonably well. No, he hadn't pledged an alliance to the Empire, but at least he hadn't shooed the diplomat away. Smiling, he walked outside and started to converse with the townsfolk. It was a start to peaceful negotiations, and that was all he could have asked for.

Altrasky walked around looking for the diplomat. Spotting him he shouted and waved "Oi! You!"

Hearing the coarse address, Mattheus shook his head in mild irritation, but quickly covered his distaste with a diplomatic smile that almost reached his eyes. "Yes, master rider? How can I help?"

Altrasky looked into the man's eyes his face impassive "I wanted to apologize." he wondered how hostile this would be taken.

Mattheus took a good look at the rider, and expression softened. This rider may have been misguided and fought for the wrong reasons, but whether or not the apology was sincere or not, he was able to apologize. Mattheus respected that.
"I hold no ill will toward you, master rider. You're a good man, who fights for a misguided lack of forgiveness toward another good man who mad with grief. I accept your apology, in hope that my actions might prove to break that loop of unforgiveness and unify our peoples."
