Altrasky felt the ghost of a smile reach his lips. "Well, when this cursed war is over, come find me, we'll have a drink." he patted the man's shoulder then walks away, stopping suddenly "Oh, by the way I'm not 'Master Rider' I'm Altrasky"

A shadow crossed over Mattheus's face, because he was well aware of the implications of either side of the Empire's Civil War succeeding in total victory. Either this Altrasky, being a rider, was going to be executed for treason, or being a representative of the Empire's wished, he was. There would be no drink after the War.
Nevertheless, he was still a diplomat. So, he tactfully lied with his best diplomat's smile he could muster. "Of course, master Altrasky. I look forward to the day we can share a drink with one another."

Altrasky's eyes grew distant. He felt something was out of place. Then he remembered seeing something out of the corner of his eye, men carrying knives in their boots, covered faces, blood, murder. Leaning forward, he whispered , "Listen to me, there will a murder tonight, and if you don't listen to me is will be yours."

Mattheus's first instinct was to scan the town for shady figures, but his training kicked in and he smiled as if the rider Altrasky hadn't said anything of importance. Don't look. Don't notice. An assassin revealed is an assassin in a panic. Then, they become only killers, and their target is whoever's in their way.
"Of course, master Altrasky. The provincial Good-Faith supply cache. Let me show you! Rations and water; arming spears and small whetstones for the guardsfolk 'round here. All in the Empire's graciousness and good faith, of course." Mattheus was willing to bet Altrasky would have said something against the Empire at that moment. In fact, he was relying on their political differences to conceal their suspicion. He hoped the rider caught on with his ploy.

Altrasky caught an idea forming, "I doubt that, more than likely just a ploy to slit our throats more like." then he added under his breath "Building on the left, black cloak."

"Now, my good rider, why would the Empire waste food and arms like that? Surely, as a key figure in this world, you must realize the importance of economic incentives. 't would a useless waste of resources that could be used otherwise. Besides, these gifts come from businesses in the Empire; not from the hand of our king. Inspect our gifts, if you wish."
"Don't tell me. I'm not the captain of my guard, nor have I any training in arms or in the slaying of my fellow beings. But thank you anyway."

Altrasky nodded several times. "I would like to see them. And why is it that you are equipping you potential enemies. Galbatrorix may be one mad man, but I wouldn't doubt his intelligence."
Altrasky whispered back "Of course not, but I want you to duck so I can throw this," he motioned to the throwing knife he had silently drawn and held against his side. "On three. One.."
The figure clad in black began to move toward them, slowly at first and gaining speed.

Mattheus jumped in shock as the dart of Gidion flew into his potential assailant. A most undiplomatic slew of profanities jumped out of the young diplomat's mouth, before he managed to compose himself. Already, two guards had their bows drawn; arrows pointed at Gidion's chest.
"Stand down! Stand down!"
"My good sir, I appreciate your intervention. The Empire thanks you, of course. However, I feel it would have been wiser to simply wound the fellow, so that his intentions could be learned, yes? What is your name, good sir?"

Altrasky cursed violently. "And just what the devil was that?" he demanded. "Who in the name of the Gods are you?" he asked angrily. He quickly threw the knife he was holding, sending it thudding into a wooden post next to the man's head. "You'd better start explaining about that!"

Altrasky laughed "As if an idiot like you could even hope to touch. You weak fool, you have no idea who you're talking with. Now get the hell out of here."

Though he and Altrasky were on opposing sides of the Civil War that wracked the Empire and her neighboring nations, Mattheus couldn't help but feel a surge of admiration for the rider that defended his appeal. Though his proposal for peace had been spurned, Altrasky had honored his profession and his position.
"My thanks, master Altrasky. I'll see to it that my guard move the hooded man to a more comfortable place, for medical attention. The man's life, though he is foe, is something to be preserved by whatever means available."
He turned to the bowman, his eyes comparable to icicles in an arctic climate in the dead of winter. "Young master rider, I appreciate your efforts. However, I strongly suggest you withhold threats against a diplomat under the protection of diplomatic law. Captain Erebus, get the wounded man onto a mattress; remove the arrow and clean out his injury."

"My name is Altrasky." he answered simply, "And whatch your tounge, or I may have to tie it in a knot."
