Max walked through the streets of Gil'ead, Allanon next to him with his black robes and cloak, hood up and hiding his face. "It's been a while, Allanon," he said, grinning and looking over at the magician,"I haven't been to Gil'ead in a long while." "Yes, well, I'll be making sure you dont' neglect your studies of the Ancient Language while we're here visiting." "Oh, fine," Max said, laughing and grinning. "I wouldn't have to push you so hard if you didn't insist on being neutral in this war......And the reason I stay with you is to push you toward the Varden. They fight for what is best for Alagaesia." "I know all of it, Allanon," Max said,"You've said it all before. But, I remain resolute in this. I want no part of their war. "Granted, the Varden may be in the 'right'," he said,"but, who says it'll be better for Alagaesia? I mean, the Varden could install someone who is just as bad, or possibly even wo-" Max cut himself off as he looked through the crowd and saw someone he knew, long ago, off in the crowd on the other side of a street. "Is that....Rolie?" he muttered to himself, running forward toward her,"Marola!! Hey, Marola!"

Marola was walking slowly through the streets of Gil'ead toward her home. She was in a contemplative mood. She still didn't like the city for the memory of her father's death, but she knew this was the safest place for her son. She had such mixed feelings about the place. She had had friends here when she was younger, but she hadn't seen any of them in years. She came to a dead stop when she heard someone call out her name. Turning slowly, she saw a man walking toward her who looked familiar. Then she nearly took off at a run when she recognized him. "Max..." she whispered, memories of her childhood friend rushing through her. She couldn't run now that he knew it was her. She simply stood in amazement, her face betraying no feeling, but her eyes wide in surprise at seeing Maxwell again.

Max watched as she stayed rooted in place, her face stoney. It was Marola, there was no doubt about that.... .....but it was a Marola completely different from the one he had known. He slowed his pace as this thought went through his mind, but he pushed it aside, coming up to her, grinning. "Hey, Rolie!" he said, using the nickname he'd had for her when they'd known each other years ago as children out of habit, grinning,"Miss me?"

Marola just stared at him as he walked up to her. She blinked at his nickname for her. "Maxwell?" she asked dumbly. She hadn't seen him in so long, she didn't know what else to say. Finally, she collected herself. "What are you still doing in Gil'ead, Max? I would have figured you'd leave years ago."

Max shook his head. "I've been traveling since I was 15," he said,"As a mercenary, taking jobs protecting villages from bandits because the Empire's soldiers didn't do it, since they're off fighting the Varden and everything. "I just now came back for a visit, see if anyone we used to know was still here," he said, giving her a smile,"Wasn't expecting to find you." He broke out into a wide grin and reached over and hugged her. "I have to be honest, Marola...," he said,"I missed you."

Marola listened to Max as he talked. She couldn't stop a smile from coming onto her face as she returned his hug, lightly kissing his cheek. (ooc: it's a hugkiss! woohoo! lol) "I never expected to see you again either," she told him, the bonds of their friendship reaching past her long hard years. "I missed you, too. I'm..." she trailed off for a second, "I'm sorry I left like I did, without even saying goodbye."

Max grinned as Marola kissed him on the cheek, pulling back from her as she talked. "What? You're apologizing?" he said, his grin widening,"Doesn't sound like the Marola I know." He laughed and winked at her. "Besides, that's in the past," he said, laughing,"I'm just glad to see you again. "So....what's happened to my friend since we last saw each other?"

Marola laughed a little. It had been unlike her to apologize about anything when she was younger. She was always right about everything, and she would never have backed down. She sighed at Max's question, though. "Too much to say," she told him, "and much more that I cannot say, even if I wished to." She smiled slightly at him. "If you really want to hear all, is there somewhere we can get together? Standing in the street would get rather tiresome during my tale."

Max shook his head, smilling ta Marola. "No...I just got into town," he said, shrugging,"So.... I haven't had time to rent a room at an inn yet. "How about you? Do you have anywhere? Or are you just visiting like me?"

Marola felt slightly uncomfortable with the question, but she answered. "Well, there is my father's house. I inherited it after he died." She really didn't want him there, though, because if she took him there, he would find out about Cortell, and the more people who knew about him would increase the danger to her son. What could one more person hurt? she wondered, idly connecting with Rauthr, I don't think Max would tell anyone if I asked him not to. Rola, it was a long time ago that you knew him. People change. You are the perfect example of this! Still, she felt she could trust her old friend. She smiled. "That's probably as good a place as any to meet," she told him.

Max nodded. "All right then," he said, smiling,"I'd say lead the way, but I know how to get there, if my memory of this place hasn't completely deteriorated." "Max!" Allanon said, laughing as he came up behind Max and Marola as they started walking,"What are you doing? Why didn't you tell me you had such a pretty lady friend?"

Marola smiled at the man who walked up. "Because he only knew his pretty lady friend when she was just a pretty little girl down the street," she told him, "who abandoned him and the rest of the city when she was seven years old." She glanced at Max. "Do you want to catch up later? I'm sure you must have things to do. If you want, you know where to find me."

Max shook his head. "I've got nothing to do," Max said, looking over at Allanon,"What about you?" "Well, I did want to look around a few of the local shops and see what I could get from them," he said, giving a knowing smile,"So, why dont' you go ahead with your friend, and I'll catch up with you later. You know where to find me." Max grinned at the old man. "Right," he said as Allanon walked away, then turned back to Marola,"I guess it's just you and me, then, huh? So, let's keep going."

Marola nodded gratefully. She would have had to think up some sort of excuse if Max's other friend had wanted to come along. She had no idea if she could have trusted him. She walked up the street toward her house, leading the way for Max. She felt a smile break over her face as the mansion came into veiw, with its stone steps leading up to the entrance, which was overshadowed by a large roof over the porch. The door opened as she approached and she saw Hannah, her maid and most loyal servant, standing there to greet her. The old woman had been her nurse when she was little, and she now played the same role for her son. "'allo, m'lady," Hannah greeted her. Marola shook her head slightly at the formality with which the servant addressed her. There was a time when she called her "little Rola." She walked up to the door. "Hello, Hannah," she said, "You remember Maxwell, don't you?" The maid looked with wide eyes at him, "Why, bless mah soul! I ain't seen you since you was knee high!" She ushered them into the house. OOC: I'll finish tomorrow.

Max grinned. "Hello, Hannah," he said, laughing,"Yeah, it's been a long time, hasn't it? I'm...kind of grown up now. But, it's great to see you again." He looked over at Marola and said,"So, is Hannah the only familiar face still around, or is everyon else gone?"
