Mar looked at her, tired of explaining things to her. "Because she despises me for what I did, the role I played in your...conception," Mar looked up to the sky, letting the slight breeze cool his burning face. "There are...other things for which she would like me watched for. For one, she does not wish to be taken to your father again, which I'm sure will not happen. The other things, well let's just say she is missing a few members because of me."

Kalri looked at him, finally understanding. She had always thought Nashante to be a willing...release....for Galbatorix. Now she understood that Nashante had little say. No wonder she distanced herself from Kalri. No matter, Kalri had no use for her. Looking to her friend she eyed him carefully as she spoke. "Mar I swear to you that she will never raise hand against you. I will kill her myself." She decided that she would tell him something that she had been thinking about for a while. "I am considering challenging her to Seithrs Wyrda. If I took control of the coven..."

Mar almost lost his breath when she mentioned challenging her mother. "You know she is quiet powerful, right? You are too, but it is still extremely dangerous. If you lose, you die."

"Yes I know. I said I was thinking about it. I haven't decided. I threatened her once before, shortly after Aethelwyne had sent father her little message after mother put the contracts out on her and her lover. Mar. She was scared I would follow through with it. I saw it in her eyes." Kalri looked at him with almost hatred burning in her eyes for her mother.

Mar looked at her, though he was unsure if she would hear him. "Yes, I'm sure she would be afraid of you. But think, don't act," he said calmly. "If you rush things, they can turn out very poorly."

Kalri rolled her eyes quickly. 'Why does everyone always assume I do not think? My hair is brown not blonde!" "Yes I hear you. I have not decided but, if she tries anything against father or you I swear I will kill her without hesitation. I know her ways and Father has taught me well in his ways. Ways taken from places witches fear to look."

Mar smiled. "I do not believe you don't think, just that you are sometimes rash. But, yes, you may kill her if the opportunity presents itself, but do not go looking for it."

"I will...if the opportunity presents itself. Until then I watch her. Now what did you have in mind if not tracking the mercenary?"

Mar shrugged his shoulders. "I don't know, just that we can't stay in the area. We are being followed, and I don't think just by your mother."

"Great! What else is new? This must be a theme of fate for my family. Always being pursued by someone somewhere. Can't we all just get along?"

Mar smiled at her. "That is a very famous quote, young lady. You can get in trouble using, so be careful," he said with a wink. "But I'm afraid it is the story of your father's, and now your own, life."

Kalri looked out over the horizon. Hearing his words, she knew the truth in them. Her fate had been sealed that day when Mar brought Nashante to Galbatorix all those years ago. A certain sadness sat upon her eyes as she looked out over the landscape. Calling for Sabonth, the two packed their supplies on her and set out on foot. Kalri watched as the mighty black dragon took off to fly over head, keeping watch. She turned to Mar, the sadness still within, "Shall we get started on foot today? I think the walk will do me good to clear my head."

Mar nodded, pulling the straps on his pack to make it fit better in his back. "Yes, I think that would be fine, but keep your guard up." Mar walked beside Kalri through the small group of woods, and then onto the open plains and rolling hills.

Kalri walked silently beside Mar. Her thoughts racing to her Mother. Before she realized, they had walked all of the morning and the sun was high in the sky. "Mar, how about a break? I could use something to drink."

Mar gave no indication that he had heard Kalri, only kept walking. Ahead of them, a small oasis was surrounded by tall trees. Pointing to them, Mar picked up the pace, something in the back of his mind telling him to hurry.
